PhoneType: Photochemical Prints With a SmartPhone: We've become accustomed to taking digital photos, but at the expense of creating physical prints. Defining lumen prints and how to make them. Lumen prints are a form of photogram or photogenic drawing that are made with photo sensitive materials such as black and white photographic papers, color photo papers, B&W, and color films. Henry Fox Talbot was the earliest pioneer in discovering this art form. A subject is placed on top of photo paper and exposed for a lenghty period until the paper prints out in a similar manner as a silver chloride printing out paper does. Chemical development is not necessary, however, chemical fixation is necessary to stabalize the print for greater permanence. Toning with gold chloride, selinium or platinum will reduce fading during the fixation process and will enhance archival stability. Every brand and type of photo paper has distinctive tonal and color characteristics. Jerry Burchfields' Primal Images is an exceptional monograph of lumen prints. I highly recommend this volume for the serious study of lumen prints. Making a lumen print. 1. Place sheet of black and white photographic paper in a shallow tray or on a flat board.2.Compose your subject or specimen on the photographic paper. 3. Cover the specimen with a sheet of glass. 4. Place your prepared tray or board in direct sun light for several hours. Your should conduct exposure tests to determine the right exposure for the photographic paper that you are using. 5. Take specimen indoors and remove the glass cover and the specimen from the paper surface, 6. Your now have a lumen print. 7. You will need to fix your print for perminence, Use sodium thiosulfate or ammonium thiosulfate as a fixing agent. 8.Wash your print to remove the fixing agent. 9. Dry your print on a screen and you hve your finished lumen print. Do not use UV blocking glass to cover your specimens. Use simple window glass. I have listed the paper types and brands with the lumen print examples in this Lumen Print set. The set includes examples of over 100 types of paper. I had to make a second lumen print set "Lumen Prints vol.2" because the first set was getting too hard to open and organize. The most recent examples are in Lumen Prints vol.2
