I think it is interesting how the european styled backdrop interferes with the chinese decorations and costumes. From a German photographic album with photographs from the Tsingtau (Qingdao) area around 1900. Kevin (thank you!!!) informed me that the old man on the left is Li Hongzhang (1823 - 1901). He was the most mighty Mandarin of the late Qing Empire.

Shown here are William Cooper and David Barrett, two China Inland Mission missionaries killed by the Boxers in July, 1900.
