Welcome to the downhill slide of another week, friends! Spring has definitely sprung, and around my house, that means evenings and weekends at the baseball field and enjoying the perfect temperatures as much as possible. Today, I have a finished anniversary quilt to share with you. My friend's parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this month, and my friend asked me to make a special quilt for them (for privacy reasons, I've blurred their identifying info that is embroidered in the center of the quilt. This quilt was a long time in the making (for me, anyway). My friend wanted the quilt to be personal and represent their family members, and she actually began collecting the handprints at Thanksgiving and Christmas last year! She traced each family member's handprint onto Heat n Bond Lite, wrote their names on them, and mailed all of them to me. She fell in love with the Dixie fabric collection by Allison Harris, and I think these cheery fabrics are perfectly lovely in this quilt. I constructed the quilt in 12 inch blocks, fitting the handprints around the center. I was even able to arrange the handprints by family group. On the back, I used all of the leftovers, and used a navy tonal fabric to widen it out. Wide-ish stippling kept me from quilting through the handprints and embroidery too much, and I chose a red binding to frame it out. It's not my usual type of quilt, but I'm so happy I was able to make this quilt for my friend, and I do love the Dixie fabrics. Last week's party rocked, and I have the highlights to prove it! Look at this improv string diamond quilt by The Lilac Cat! This fun quilt is by Quilting is More Fun Than Housework- and oh my goodness, this little mini by Slice of Pi Quilts is awesome! and because I can't help myself, I have to share another mini by Jayne at Twiggy and Opal. What a cool twist on the pattern! I can't wait to see what's going on at your machine this week! Let's link up! 1. You can link finished projects or WIP's , but just keep it about quilting and sewing! 2. Link to your specific post (not to your home page!) to make it easier for others. 3. Please remember to spread the word and post my button or a text link. 4. Spread the comment love far and wide! 5. Following me is not a requirement to link, but is so very appreciated! *If you're new to the party, here's a helpful tip for linking up- select "Auto Crop" when selecting your thumbnail photo. My son in laws grandparents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this weekend. The pictures are so stinkin' cute I can hardly stand it! Such fun memories! The fabrics are all from Riley Blake. The kids will be presenting the quilt to their parents at a special retreat this weekend. I sure hope they like it! 49" x 50" To print the pictures, you will need "Sew in" printable fabric, a high quality ink jet printer and high resolution/quality pictures. The pictures MUST be very high quality or you wont get a good result. For the printable fabric, that I prefer is Printed Treasures by Dritz. You can find it at JoAnn Fabric or HERE on Amazon.com. Please follow the manufactures instructions exactly. There are other, less expensive options, but this one is the most fabric like and it's the softest ;)

A Guest Book Quilt is a great alternative for your guests to write their well wishes to the “Guest(s) of Honor”! Then handcrafted and stitched together to create a beautiful keepsake quilt filled with well wishes and memories. This listing is for the KIT only *. This is NOT a finished quilt. Here's a general guide on how the process will work: 1. Selecting the Quantity of Squares: You will be able to select the quantity of square when placing your order in increments of 25. Tip: Through experience we have discovered that most people will sign one square to represent a couple or family. So, even though you may have 100 guests, most likely, only 50-60 squares will be signed. 2. Select Fabric Squares: We have a good selections of fabrics to choose from. Please select one or two or three of your favorites. Keep in mind that other colored or patterned fabrics can be added when the quilt is constructed. Choose the signature square fabrics that will go best with your color preferences. For instance, if you want your finished quilt to be burgundy, navy and white, then you will want to choose the whites for your guests to sign. After the event, the darker colors can be added and arranged with the white signature squares to compliment the final layout of the quilt. (See images on this listing for fabric selections/options). The fabric squares are prepared specifically so the fabrics are stable and easy to write on with the special fabric maker. 3. The Kit includes Fabric Markers: The Kit will include special textile markers to place on the table near the fabric squares. Ensure that these are the only markers used by your guests as others may not be suitable for fabric and will wash out. 4. Instructions for your Guests: The Kit includes a table sign with the instructions visible for your guests. This can be displayed in a designated area where your guests will sign or write on the fabric squares. Please see listing images 5. After the Event (Optional) Collect the Fabric Squares and return to Sweet on Stitches to have your quilt finished. As a suggestion, have a designated person collect the signed fabric squares throughout the event. The kit includes a printed shipping label for convenience. 6. Quilt Assembly: We understand the sentimental value of having a family member or friend finishing your quilt. Please let us know if we can help in any way. If you choose for us to finish your quilt, we will work closely with you to create a very special keepsake quilt. As a professional quilting service we will use quality materials and techniques. 7. This is project that I just realized that I've never blogged about. My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the end of August with a party. Not able to think of a gift, I decided to do a signature quilt. The squares were signed by the guests at the party. The blocks sat in my sewing room for months because I didn't get my sister, brother, or nephew to sign a block until I had figured out a layout based on the number of blocks I had. I wanted our blocks to be all the same colour to stand out in the middle. It ended up around 74-inches square. A guild mate embroidered my parents' name and wedding date on one of the blocks. And then it's surrounded by our blocks (with our dates of birth indicated). My nephew thought it was funny to do a second block: "The prodigy grandson." It should have read: the spoiled grandson. 😊 Blue wide-backing. How I love not having to piece (and then square up) the backing. Loopy free motion quilting for a quick finish in time to gift it on Christmas Eve. Paula asked me to have this ready for her last summer (another reason why I don't take in a lot of tops to quilt for people -- my turnaround time is horrendous!), but this was such an unusual quilt, it took a lot of thought for me to get it done. Most of the quilting was done last fall, but then I was totally stumped on how to quilt the background and border. My original thought was to freehand leaves in the "tree" portion of the quilt -- that was the easy part...... For the back, I chose Mettler 100% Cotton Silk Finish thread in color 749.... This is the finished quilt -- because a tree must have a strong root system, I used a lightweight rusty brown thread to give the texture that I wanted in the bottom area of the quilt. The reason for the lightweight thread was that I wanted to emphasize Paula's hand embroidery; a heavier weight thread would have called more attention to itself. Sepia photo transfers of family members were appliqued to the quilt; at left is what it looked like before quilting... ...and now, after quilting around and in the leaves and adding additional quilted leaves to the tree. More leaves and some background stitching; I did go with my original sashiko "cloud" idea. Determining the size of the clouds took up a lot of thinking time. The stencil had three sizes of the same cloud pattern; the label says "Overall Pattern #W1007" and it is from StenSource International. The leaves were stitched in a really pretty Sulky rayon, #1209 Light Avocado. I quilted a little bit inside each of the three birds on the quilt, straight stitched on both sides of the inner border and completed the quilting with a cable variation in the outer border. The cable that I used was from The Stencil Company, #SCO-014-2.5. For both the border and the sashiko background, I used Sulky rayon #1203, Light Weathered Blue. I have always loved Paula's imagination and her ability to make stunning art pieces utilizing her applique and embroidery skills. I had lunch with her a couple of months ago and took some pictures of quilts she had finished and works in progress. Another post.....
I usually don't have a lot of deadlines with my quilts, but I find that when I do, I'm able to actually finish them in a timely manner! These two quilts are perfect examples of that, because not only did I finish them on time, but more than a week early! And that feels good! The first one up is the Kona Solids Challenge quilt that I made for the ECMQG. I mentioned this before, but for those of you who are new to my blog, I did a Solids Challenge Quilt before, when I was part of the LAMQG. I hated that quilt, and still do! So to have a second chance at this challenge was a good thing. I'm much happier with this quilt. It only consists of three blocks (which I posted about here), but each of those blocks consisted of over 50 pieces. I wanted this to be a functional (meaning, kind of big) quilt, as well, so there's alot of negative space in it. This quilt is for our couch, and it's big enough for me to snuggle under with all the kiddos. It's also big enough for my husband to use comfortably. I have to give some serious props to my husband. I had no idea how to quilt this. I posed the question on the Modern Quilt Guild Facebook page, and got some great suggestions, but I needed the quilting to not be really time consuming, because I'm still new to this three kids thing, and the quilt needed to be finished by the meeting, which is on March 30, and I needed to finished another quilt by March 31. So when my husband gave me his suggestion, I realized that would be the quickest option. And it turns out, I really like it, and think it was the best way to quilt it. I basically just outline each star, and made the lines extend out as far as they would go. After the main quilting was done, I thought the stars still needed a little more detail, so I traced those inside and out with black thread. I have never quilted with black thread before (remember this for later), but after I did one of the stars, I really liked the way it looked, so I did it with the other two. For the back, I just wanted to keep it simple. So I used the scraps from the stars on the front, and improvisational pieced together a block. I like the way the black-outlined stars look - it gave it a little more oomph to what otherwise have been a pretty plain back. I used Essex Linen in Natural for the front and the back. I don't know if it's obvious from the pictures, but I had two different dye lots of the linen, and the color difference is pretty substantial. Turned out looking pretty cool, though! I used the lighter dye lot on the strip of stars going down the front of the quilt, and going across with the improv block on the back. For the binding, I chose one of the colors from the charm pack - Kona Coral - to use, but I also put in a few more scraps on one part. I can't wait until our meeting to see what everyone else made! This next one, I mentioned last week, was totally and completely inspired by a quilt I saw on Pinterest. I needed to make a quilt for someone who's getting married, and when I saw this, I knew I had to make it! Moda Crossweave seemed to be the most "tree-ish" looking fabric that I could decide on, so I used Tan for the front and Natural for the back. It's hard to see in those pictures, but I did wood grain quilting. And remember how I said I had never quilted with black thread before? Well, this one is totally quilted with black thread. But I thought that's what it really needed. Here's a little better perspective on that... And here's a glimpse of the label and the binding (Moda Crossweave in Blue). Since I've got two finishes to show for, I'm linking up to Amanda Jean's Finish It Up Friday. Check out what other people have finished up this week!
