COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - With their exaggerated features and angular contours, stoneware face jugs rival Picasso portraits in their expressive force. But unlike the well-documented paintings of the French master, these humble American vessels often lack known provenance and pedigree, a deficiency addressed by "Early American Face Jugs." The exhibition, on view at Fenimore Art Museum through December 31, and its companion catalog build on regional studies to create the most comprehensive account to date of a distinctive American tradition that spread south and west from the Mid-Atlantic states in the mid-Nineteenth Century.
Large Face Jug by North Carolina Potter Carlie Tart Maybe meant to be a kind of pirate vampire. About 10 1/2" tall. The signature on the bottom reads "Carlie Tart 94". Since the original posting of this piece, I have had more opportunities to compare to his other works and signatures. This is significant. Carlie Tart was a master potter, master chef and veteran of the D-Day landing at Normandy. He was head chef at the Hilton Hotel on Hilton Head Island, and a teacher to generations of artists. While he had his own T-art studio, I think this is the only Carlie Tart face jug to ever be posted to the Internet (thus far). Originally it had 2 junk silver hoop earrings in the ears, and if you like that pirate look you could do that again, but I think they were a bit of a chipping hazard, especially during shipping. I think at least one of the five teeth may have been longer originally. At the end of one of the teeth is a tiny chip in the lower lip. You can see it if you look at the jug from below. No other defects noted. See photos for best details. Careful packing and fully insured shipping are included. Price reflects rarity and extra shipping care and material that will be required for this piece.

Hunter or Hipster, Male, 2012 Young artist Rebecca Morgan creates stirring, funny and often grotesque depictions of the “bumpkins” she grew up around in the Appalachian Mountain region of Pennsylvania. She sculpts, draws and paints with a wide range, and while her work may not always be flattering, her identification with and affection for her subjects is obvious, right down to her own bumpkiny self-portraits. Her wealth of influences may account for such a meandering use of style: [Morgan’s] characters touch on truths about poverty, addiction, and off-the-grid living, as well as idealizations of uncultured country life. Stylistically, Morgan embraces hyper-detailed naturalism, influenced by Dutch painters such as Memling, Brueghel, and Van Eyck, as well as absurd, repulsive caricature suggestive of underground cartoonists like R. Crumb. Morgan now spends much of her time in New York City—she’s repped by the Asya Geisberg Gallery on 23rd Street. She says she feels the pull of the country when she’s in the metropolis, but misses the culture of the city when she’s back home—something I’d argue most rural transplants can relate to, to one degree or another. While I certainly sympathize, I couldn’t be more...
