The walls of this house in Australia by architects McBride Charles Ryan have origami-like facets and folds. Located on the south coast, the holiday home is named after the Klein Bottle, which is the mathematical term for a surface with an indefinable left, right, top or bottom. Rooms angle around a central courtyard and step upwards

“The exhibition focuses on the concept of city (Milan) as a collective work. After World War II, Milano was a heavily bombed city and its reconstruction was the main task for architects and developers, engaged in the effort of rethink the idea of “modernity” according to new needs and aspirations of the middle class. The main issue is on the theme of the façade as an urban contribution to a shared landscape that deals with modernity, lightness, optimistic confidence in a viable future. “Future is unavoidable”, used to state Gio Ponti, who strongly believed in the representative values of light materials, such as ceramics, glass, aluminum and even plastics. The “light façade” – facciata leggera – was for Ponti the main idea of a progress in civilization from the age of stone and bronze to present times. The symbolic significance of light materials and flat façades went far beyond the mere use of modern building materials, because the “envelope” was a surface where the moral program of “being absolutely modern” takes on the force of a “manifesto” and express the commitment of the middle classes to build a new world. The issue was taken by Milanese architects as a field for confrontation: the common ground was the shaping of the “condominium” as the new format for housing in the modern metropolis. Caccia Dominioni, Ponti, Albini, Gardella, Magistretti, Mangiarotti, Morassutti, Asnago & Vender, Latis, etc. all took the theme as Leitmotiv of their work, contributing with their different personalities to its development as a collective theme related to the emerging skyline of Milan. Their work is like a rhapsody where a dominant tone can be taken up and sang in different ways: the flat façade is like a screen where personal motif can be represented just as an answer or a commentary on the works of others.”
These parasitic buildings commandeer wasted urban space, often siphoning utilities from their host buildings. Some are additions that make no attempt to blend into the original structures, some are serious solutions for making the most of existing space, and others make artistic statements on fringe society and sustainable growth, but all illustrate that there are
