Reconfigurable devices, whose shape can be drastically altered, are central to expandable shelters, deployable space structures, reversible encapsulation systems and medical tools and robots. All these applications require structures whose shape can be actively controlled, both for deployment and to conform to the surrounding environment. While most current reconfigurable designs are application specific, here we present a mechanical metamaterial with tunable shape, volume and stiffness. Our approach exploits a simple modular origami-like design consisting of rigid faces and hinges, which are connected to form a periodic structure consisting of extruded cubes. We show both analytically and experimentally that the transformable metamaterial has three degrees of freedom, which can be actively deformed into numerous specific shapes through embedded actuation. The proposed metamaterial can be used to realize transformable structures with arbitrary architectures, highlighting a robust strategy for the design of reconfigurable devices over a wide range of length scales. Typically, most structures and devices that can be reconfigured are designed with application specific requirements. Inspired by modular origami ideas, Overveldeet al. present a mechanical metamaterial enabling the design of three-dimensional structures of arbitrary architecture with tunable shape, volume and stiffness.

“Transformable clothes: the contribution of a new modular system” is the name of an MA practical thesis I am developing. The aim of the project is to understand what are the benefits and problems of transformable clothes, and if a construction based in a modular system can contribute to create more possibilities of designs in the same garment. So far, studies have shown that the main weakness of transformable clothes based in a modular construction is a low level of transformation in the structure, and consequently in the silhouette, form and volume. Regarding this conclusion, we committed ourselves to propose an alternative solution that will increase the possibilities of transformation in the structure, silhouette, form and volume of clothes. The images show models developed for testing solutions. During the tests we tried different materials for the modules (such as felt, different types of artificial leather and Neoprene) different sizes and shapes, ways to connect the modules (through the module itself or with elements such as eyelets, metal screws, and plastic screws) and different schemes of connections. The best solution we got used two layers of modules, made from artificial leather, that are stitched to each other in the sides, with a corset bone going on the middle. This way, the construction has a more structured behavior. The connections are made from plastic screws because they are lighter than metallic ones (the weight of metal screws forced the structure to expand). Taking in consideration this information, I would like to ask for ideas about the technical aspects of the models developed: Suggestions about materials, connectors of modules, schemes of liking, or any other suggestions that you think would contribute for the improvement of what was made till now.
