DETAILS, DETAILS: This mini-collection of architectural delights celebrates fundamental elements of art history and archaeology, and includes one of each style of column capital. The Doric order is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of its columns. It was the earliest and in its essence the simplest of the orders. The capital was a simple circular form, with some mouldings, under a square cushion that is very wide in early versions, but later more restrained. Heavily used in Greek Revival architecture from the 18th century onwards, when the three orders are used one above the other, it is usual for the Doric to be at the bottom, with the Ionic and then the Corinthian above, and the Doric, as "strongest", is often used on the ground floor below another order in the storey above. The iconic Ionic capital is characterized by the use of its scroll-like volutes, with the cap enriched with egg-and-dart patterning. Following the conquests of Alexander the Great in the east, examples of the Ionic order were found scattered as far as Pakistan. The Corinthian order is the most ornate of the orders of classical architecture, characterized by slender fluted columns and elaborate capitals decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls. This mini-collection of architectural delights celebrates these fundamental elements of art history and archaeology.
