Our ambition is to create the ultimate nursing home for people suffering from dementia in an attractive, familiar setting, in which the quality of life of the residents is top priority and the nursing home is the functional background. The main architectural concept is to create a building complex, whose housing collectives adapt to the structure of the existing care homes, and which, in interaction, embrace an inner, shielded neighbourhood. In the centre of the shielded neighbourhood there are a number of solitary buildings with communal facilities. Their organic idiom is based on the surrounding landscape, shape-wise creating a sense of solidarity with the context. The buildings’ irregular idiom and interdependent location help to create different areas of varying sizes. In their own way, they will all generate different types of gathering points and stimulate the senses of both residents and visitors. At the same time, the layout of the building encourages movement around the neighbourhood and helps the residents find their way around. The main concept of the plan organises the individual housing collectives into small, individual ‘residential areas’ like in a village, alluding clearly to ordinary houses and domesticity. Using well-conceived architecture, the aim of the project is to help soothe the minds of the residents, in particular reducing disruptive behavioural symptoms and helping them to fend for themselves as much as possible, thereby improving their quality of life.
