This Armenian Gospel book was produced in 904 of the Armenian era (1455 CE) at the monastery of Gamałiēl in Xizan by the scribe Yohannēs Vardapet, son of Vardan and Dilšat, and was illuminated by the priest Xačʿatur. The priest Pʿilipos commissioned the manuscript as a memorial to himself, his parents Łazar and Xutʿlumēlikʿ, and other relatives listed in the colophon on fols. 300r to 301v. Pʿilipos is depicted on fol. 14v alongside his brothers Yusēpʿ and Sultanša, as they kneel before the Virgin and Child enthroned (Theotokos). The book contains 26 full-page polychrome miniatures, including 4 Evangelist portraits; ornately-designed canon tables; 4 decorated incipit pages; numerous marginal miniatures of floral and faunal motifs; and 19 marginal miniatures of biblical characters or allusions to biblical narratives. Mikayel Arakelyan presents a comprehensive study of the art and iconography of the Armenian miniaturist Mesrop of Xizan, one of the most significant representatives of the 17th-century Xizan and New Julfan schools of manuscript illumination. The monograph has over 100 illustrations including 42 full-page reproductions.
This highly decorated Gospel Book was made in Armenia in the early seventeenth century. An extensive colophon reveals that it was commissioned by a woman named Napat' as a memorial for herself and her family, and the book was consequently given by her to the Church of Saint Sargis in Amida. The artist, Hovannes, and the scribe, Melk'on, are known collaborators on a number of of other manuscripts, and this book is an excellent example of their skill. Richly painted Evangelist portraits and intricate canon tables are complimented by simpler marginal illuminations that often connects to the Gospel passages they adorn. Related manuscripts by this artist and scribe team include Erevan, Matenadaran, no. 1245, and London, British Museum, Add. Ms. 27, 301.
