Omelette Arnold Bennett. The omelette that the writer Arnold Bennett asked the chef at the Savoy hotel to make for him was prepared a little differently to this, but I’d like to thank him all the same for the inspiration. GLYNNE BOYD HARTE Lithograph from Folio edition of 'The Old Wives' Tale' (Arnold Bennett) 1994. Printed One Side Only on Caxton Wove Paper C.9.5x6ins.. Photo 2 is for information and does not form part of the sale. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1973 he established a flourishing career as an illustrator, poster designer and painter. Illustration was enjoying a revival during the 1970s, and Boyd Harte’s work, with its rich vein of irony and technical perfection soon found an audience. At his Degree Show, the film maker and publisher Jonathan Gili spotted a drawing of a Staffordshire cottage which in turn led to the publication by Warren Editions of Murderers’ Cottages (1976) a black-humoured chapbook. This began a lasting association with Jonathan Gili and Warren Editions, and Glynn was to illustrate a number of de-luxe artists books for the Press. These were commissioned in small editions, in the main as gifts for Warren Editions and friends, and have since become extremely collectable and scarce. You have to live on twenty-four hours of daily time. Out of it you have to spin health, pleasure, money, content, respect, and the evolution of your immortal soul. Its right use, its most effective use, is a matter of the highest urgency and of the most thrilling actuality. All depends on that. Your happiness - the elusive prize that you are all clutching for, my friends! - depends on that. Which of us lives on twenty-four hours a day? And when I say "lives," I do not mean exists, nor "muddles through." Which of us is not saying to himself - which of us has not been saying to himself all his life: "I shall alter that when I have a little more time"?

1948; Anna of the Five Towns by Arnold Bennett. unknown artist
Growing up in the world of the 'five towns' of industrial England, with their furnaces and chimneys, huddled red-brown streets, prayer meetings and small-minded bigotry, Anna is dominated by her miserly and tyrannical father. When she inherits a fortune and finds love, she struggles to break free from the constraints upon her, even though she is torn between duty and her deepest feelings. Arnold's novel of parental tyranny and rebellion is a portrayal of a woman of great spirit, complexity and integrity. 'Deeply moving, original, and dealing with material that I had never encountered in fiction, but only in life' Margaret Drabble
