1974. Le glam se meurt... Ziggy Stardust est mort. Aladdin Sane est mort. Major Tom est perdu dans l'espace et ne reviendra que dans neuf ans. David Bowie a épuisé une bonne partie de sa palette de personnages. Alors, que lui reste-t-il? Un projet de comédie musicale. Un truc fascinant! Littéraire. Une adaptation de 1984, de George Orwell. Pour ce projet, Bowie met les bouchées doubles: on vire les Spiders From Mars, le génial groupe qui l'accompagnait jusqu'alors, et avec elles le superbe guitariste Mick Ronson. Tout est prévu, ficelé, Bowie commence même à écrire quelques chansons ("Big Brother", "1984"), en oubliant un infime détail qui causa pourtant la ruine du projet: l'aval des ayant droit d'Orwell... Ces derniers refusèrent de voir ledit bowie utiliser leur poule aux oeufs d'or. Passant outre, il recruta quelques musiciens, loin de la qualité des Spiders, et prit seul la guitare. Un point positif avec cette nouvelle étape: Bowie adopte Tony Visconti, qui s'occupera des arrangements divers, tout en aidant bowie à mixer l'engin. Car, ne l'oublions pas, cet album est autoproduit! Que donne donc le travail de production d'un bowie qui n'est jamais le dernier lorsqu'il s'agit de composer? En effet, Bowie maîtrise ses compositions. Enfin... Une bonne partie tout du moins. Il décoche des riffs inhumains qui ne quitteront jamais la tete de l'auditeur ("Diamond Dogs", "Rebel Rebel", "Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family", plus mythiques encore que l'hideuse pochette de Guy Pellaert), mais, qu'a-t-on, de l'autre côté? Un concept-album qui se laisse déborder par la notion de concept. La piste d'ouverture sans musique, "Future Legend", et sa légendaire phrase choc ("This ain't rock'n' roll, this is genocide!") mettent en bouche un auditeur avide. Bowie a sans doute fait passer l'histoire, passionnante , on le conçoit (un monde chaotique et dictatorial où les gens se rendent compte que tout cela est pour leur bien), par-dessus la musique? L'ensemble en devient incongru comme les cordes sur "1984" ou les deux versions de "Sweet Thing" au sortir desquelles on se demande où le Zig veut vraiment en venir... Cet album, déchet de la transition que l'artiste opère du glam au krautrock, ne donne que plus envie d'écouter les albums antérieurs, plus frétillants, et les albums suivants, plus expérimentaux.
