Denver-based artist Lui Ferreyra (previously) has spent the last decade honing a technique that portrays faces, hands, and landscapes as dense fields of geometric color. While evoking a tone that clearly references the digital age, Ferreyra also draws inspiration from artists like Chuck Close and Egon Schiele who famously worked with aspects of pointillism and geometry. Seen here are a collection of drawings and sketches, but he utilizes a similar fragmentary style for oil paintings as well. More

Los Angeles-based artist and actor Joseph Lee paints thickly layered portraits that mask the details and expressions of his subjects’ faces. His abstracted profiles sometimes reveal a subtle hint of an eye, nose, or ear between multi-colored brushstrokes, and are set against matte backgrounds to make each painting pop. Although the facial expressions are often hidden, the self-taught artist intends to bring emotions to each face through the turn of the head or the line of a jaw. More

Artist Hope Gangloff captures the personalities of her friends and family in brightly colored large-scale portraits. Gangloff’s acrylic and collage paintings show her subjects in intimate settings—often domestic interiors—in poses of relaxation or quiet focus. The artist’s strong but gestural lines create defined shapes that are filled with repetitive marks and bright patterns. Gangloff gives equal textural attention to all areas of the painting, which draws the viewer’s eye to every detail and also contextualizes each portrait sitter in a unique set of surroundings. More

About The Artwork I was born in 1973, and my parents were farmers. In 1999, I got enrolled into an art college with a dream of becoming an artist. I am currently a father, a husband, and a painter. The duality and struggle between a domestic life of being a parent and spouse with a working life became a subject matter to my work. My work expresses conflicts and emotions aroused from distinct social roles through figurative subjects that ranges from models and cartoon characters, to gods. For each piece, I start with a simple drawing on a canvas of a chosen figure/ image. Then, I go into a constant exploration of constructing and deconstructing the image with obsessive amount of acrylics or oils to ease out my emotions. I adapt myself and live out the society through such actions. What we learn by looking at artwork — Do you ever get that question: Why do we have to learn about art or look at a bunch of art from old, outdate and dead artists? Well... there are benefits that are beyond the mastery of the art from our favorite and famous artists. Quick poster reference or handout gives modern benefits of what looking at artwork does for us. I use this every year at parent teacher conferences and have referenced for fellow faculty when the question arises. *********************************************************************** Hope Creek Studios specializes in Art Studio and History, Photography and Graphic Design lessons and creative aids.
