Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) 1892-1990 | Russian-French Une étoile de Hollywood II (Hollywood Star II) Signed “Erté” (lower right) Inscribed "No. 12.450 / La Lyre (2e mannequin) / Della Birch" (en verso) Gouache on paper In Une étoile de Hollywood II, Erté adeptly renders a design that is both glamorous and timeless. The design hails from a series of ensembles and exemplifies Erte’s dexterity in blending his Art Deco aesthetics with high fashion. Lavishly detailed with a golden hue, each gown’s form-fitting silhouette accentuates the figure. Hollywood, since its inception in the early 20th century, has been the bedrock of cinematic innovation. As the American film industry rapidly grew, so did its unique system of promoting its leading actors and actresses, creating the concept of “stardom.” Following his tenure with MGM, Erté was intimately familiar with the glamour and opulence of the silver screen’s earliest celebrities. Fashion underwent a radical transformation in the Art Deco period. The designs of Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Jean Patou, characterized by their boldness and modernity, redefined feminine style. The couture houses of the Avenue Montaigne and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré set global trends, making Paris the undisputed capital of fashion. High society flocked to opulent parties and balls, with the city’s elite showcasing the latest haute couture creations. Erté’s sartorial masterpieces found acclaim among many fashionistas and socialites, who often viewed his designs in publications including Harper’s Bazaar. Russian-French visionary Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990), popularly known as Erté, began his artistic journey in the culturally rich city of St. Petersburg, where he developed an early fondness for ballet and theatrical performances. He moved to Paris in 1912 to study architecture, and quickly found his creative niche in crafting fantastical costumes for the city’s bustling nightlife. Erté‘s expertise, refined under the guidance of the famed Paul Poiret, captured the attention of Harper’s Bazaar, marking the beginning of a significant partnership that spanned from 1915 to 1936. The artist also designed sets for notable cinematic masterpieces including Ben Hur and La Bohème, and created sets and costumes for cabarets, operas and other performances at the Folies-Bergères, Bal Tabarin, the Théâtre du Bataclan and Le Casino de Paris. Often remembered as the “Father of Art Deco,” Erté was a trailblazer whose colorful creations shaped the groundbreaking Art Deco era more than any other, leaving an indelible mark on the history of art and design. His artworks reside in prestigious museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Pochoir was a damn delicate practice, and it was inextricably bound to the star of Paris’ Golden Age of Illustration, André E. Marty. The Frenchman and his stencil-centric drawing or pochoir method defined the aesthetics of a generation, especially for the high fashion set. There was “an outpouring of luxury fashion publications that used pochoir” at the…
With abstract painterly pattern making a resurgence in fashion I thought it was essential that my final story for the‘Pop to Popism’ exhibition explores the great influence that pop art has had on editorial to runway, street style and accessories over the past few years.

Hi! Thanks for your interest in my shop! <3 This listing is for a digital downloadable file of my illustrated black/white/neutral fashions. This purchase offers you a 4 x 6 jpeg file & an 8 x 10 jpeg file. You can download whichever fits what you want this for, or both! One purchase gets you access to both sizes. A digital file is great because it allows you easy access to having this design on your computer or phone. You can also use this file to print the design on your own terms (your own terms meaning: paper thickness, color, sheen, for a card vs. a wall photo piece, etc.). And with the file itself, you can print however many copies you want or need! My process is first illustrating all the black/white/neutral fashions fashion figures by hand on paper. First pencil, then outlining everything in pen, and then rendering everything in marker. Lastly, then final design details with black or white ink. After finishing each individual illustration, I will scan then into my computer, take out the backgrounds and create them as individual tiffs. And lastly in the computer process, I am able to combine them all together into this design! I hope you enjoy this super fun fashion illustrated design as much as I loved creating it! :)

Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) 1892-1990 | Russian-French Etude de tenue Outfit Study Signed “Erté”(lower right) Gouache on paper Erté's artistic contributions were not confined to theatrical set and costume design; they also adorned the pages of prestigious magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, captivating the attention of the fashion world's most discerning critics. This specific design serves as an exemplar of Art Deco sophistication. The illustration reveals all three components of an elaborate evening ensemble. To the right, the model's embellished undergarments are displayed, while to the left, a black bodysuit adorned with white sparkles is depicted. At the center of the composition is the complete look: a radiant halter neckline that seamlessly integrates with the black bodice, all enveloped in flowing white fabric and accentuated at the waist by a geometric black belt. Russian-French visionary Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990), popularly known as Erté, began his artistic journey in the culturally rich city of St. Petersburg, where he developed an early fondness for ballet and theatrical performances.
