Bauhaus is not only one of the most important design movements in history, but an especially relevant style for Web Designers. Alex and Simone tell you why.
I won't pretend to be a comic book connoisseur. My brother and I collected Tintin books for our father to read to us before bedtime and well, that's about as far as it went for my foray into the graphic arts world. But now I'm wondering, if I had spent a little more time at the comic book store as a

USA Today had a upcoming artist spotlighted on their website a while back and another teacher had to share them with me... I fell in Love! If you haven't done so, check out Ben Heine and the cool drawings he does in his Pencil vs. Camera artwork. Today my 6th graders started a lesson based on his artwork. We talked about how cameras capture the world "just the way it is" and how our pencils can capture the world "how we want it to be." Before they could start their work they had to complete a worksheet where they practiced their pencil skills. So far so good.... can't wait to see what happens next week when we start the actual project. I am also excited to use up a stack of calendars I have had for years as the backgrounds.

Jacques Francois Carabain (1834 - 1907) was a Dutch artist recognised for his paintings of street scenes. He was born in Amsterdam and died a naturalised Belgian in Brussels. Carabain was a student of Doyer and V. Bing at the Amsterdam School of Fine Art and continued his studies in Brussels. He also spent periods abroad in France, Italy, Germany and Austria before moving permanently to Belgium. His paintings were highly detailed studies of the places he visited often containing active street scenes busy with colourful people amongst accurately recorded buildings. These images come generally from everywhere in the world, this series is like a mini European and world tour. Images from this series were made in all the following countries: Belgium, France, Greece, UK, Congo, Tunisia, Spain, Cape Verde, South Korea, Hong Kong, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Canary Islands, Poland, Russia, Germany. What was your inspiration for this particular set of photos? I started this concept several years ago until today because I am both a photographer and an illustrator. I always thought that photography, even heavily edited, retouched and enhanced, was lacking a human touch and creativity. I love taking photos, I think cameras are somehow the first AI powered tools that helped artists generating images instantly. But I needed something more and a human touch, that's why I started the Pencil Vs Camera concept. The piece of paper is like a door to a parallel universe full of imagination and fantasy. In general, my sources of inspiration come from existancial questions but also more simply from the beauty of nature, animals, music and my precious family. How long did it take collectively? How long did you spend on average for each one? It required a huge amount of time, work, discipline, energy and motivation because I do everythiing by myself, I find the ideas, take the photo (no stock image), do the drawing and post production. The full series count about 200 images. All together it represents about 5000 hours of work... I usually spend between 2 and 6 days to make one image, including the research of an idea, the creation of the drawing on paper, the editing of the photo itself, removing all the imperfections, improving the colours, details, and general quality of the photos (because they might be exhibited so everything has to be perfect). It takes this long because all the material I capture are in super HD, so it is heavy with a lot of pixels and information. Which one took the longest, and why? Many took very long, among these, this one took particularly long to do: www.flickr.com/photos/benheine/6967423963/in/album-721576... Because it is in colour and the lion is very realistic. This one also took a long time to make: Breathe Pencil Vs Camera : www.pinterest.com/pin/voici-une-toute-nouvelle-oeuvre-pen... Because I had a model to brief, special lighting to add to compemsate the lack of light in an indoor location, the drawing is complex... What part of the process is the hardest? Both drawing and photography require technical skills and specific material and tools. Editing the photo require knowledge in using complex and modern digital cameras, in editing softwares, drawing requires knowledge in live sketching, shadowing, perspective, anatomy, architecture... Each image is different and I face different challenges on each new project. I enjoy both drawing and photography and I have the skills and experience, so it's not hard but it is time consuming. I have been drawing daily since the age of 11 and learn mainly as a self taught person ( although I did Art Academy during 2 years) because I decided to do a master in communication/journalism but even during these studies, I never stopped drawing until now. I learned analog and digital photography during my master in communication/journalism. Can you explain the method behind how you do this? The concept is very simple: holding a piece of paper with a creative drawing when taking a photo in any place. Basically, I use several methods but the result is always the same. The method and work process I use the most is the following: Find an idea and a location, do some test photos and sketches Do a final creative drawing on paper that matches the location Take a photo in that location with my drawing and doing all the necessary adjustments on site (make the connections match between the drawing and the photo). I sometimes do many trials and errors because I need to adjust the distance between the drawing and the main background, between the drawing and the camera lense, change the depth of field so that both layers are sharp, not blurred etc... Edit and enhance the final photo as any photographer would do My concept is now taught by many art teachers around the world and in school books in Brazil, so it travels even more. I do school projects, workshops and lessons since 5 years in many schools in France and Belgium and I do regular online sessions with schools in Canada and South America. The concept is taught by teachers everywhere in the world, they contact me to get information about the concept, I send them teaching material (art theory, exercices about creativity, drawing and step by step process to do Pencil Vs Camera images) Which of these is your favourite, and why? In your selection this one is my favorite: Pencil Vs Camera - St Basil Cathedral - Russia Because it was a live challenge which I almost improvised on site. I made it before the war and invasion by Russia in Ukraine. I also love all the ones I made for TMB in Congo www.flickr.com/photos/benheine/albums/72157712523631088, because they are quite recent and because it is a series in the series and because it was a big travel and project for the biggest bank of Africa Please feel free to add anything extra - for example, any funny/ interesting anecdotes that may have happened while you were creating. I have hundreds of anecdotes for each image. One anecdote for instance with the Buddha image: my first idea was to make Buddha do a "piece and love" sign with his other hand shown on the paper, but my local partner in Hong Kong told me it was totally forbidden to show Buddha do such a sign, which I didn't know so I found something else, softer... For the images I made in Congo, Africa, I had to illustrate very serious financial bank services so I had to remain pro while doing some attractive sketches, not easy, I also had to ask local black skinned models to hold the piece of paper (because it is normally always my white hand), so it was another little challenge. In Russia, I had the pleasure and honor to sleep in the same room where Michael Jackson slept at Hotel Metropol in Moscow, it felt special and I prepared some sketches for my project in that room, that's why I wanted the angel to hold a big heart. All the images from the series with animals were chaotic, these were moving all the time like crazy so I had to fix some of these in editing... www.benheine.com
