When I was researching this list and considering the history of photography in Seattle, I immediately thought of Imogen Cunningham. Born in Portland in 1883, Cunningham came to Seattle in the first years of the 1900s to attend the University of Washington. When she graduated, in 1907, she went to work in the local studio of Edward Curtis. Curtis was a prominent shooter, and the job was a plum beginning for an aspiring photographer. But...

Imogen Cunningham, (12 de abril de 1883 - 24 de junio de 1976) fue una fotografa americana. Se inicio muy joven, en 1901, en la tecnica fotografica, capacitandose en quimicos, sobre todo en platinotipia y en el retoque de fotografias mientras trabajaba para Edward Sheriff Curtis y luego con una beca en la Escuela Superior de Dresde. En 1910, luego de recibir influencias de Alvin Langdon Coburn y Alfred Stieglitz, abre su propio estudio en Seattle y se convierte en fotografa profesional, obteniendo rapidamente el reconocimiento publico por la calidad de su trabajo, mayormente de estilo pictorialista. En los años 20, su estilo evoluciono, con mas preocupacion por el detalle y fotografiando temas botanicos, fundamentalmente flores. En los años 30, sus intereses volvieron a cambiar y se dedico al cuerpo humano, fundamentalmente manos. Trabajo en esos años para Vanity Fair. En los años 40, siempre en evolucion, se dedico a la fotografia de calle y ocupo un puesto en la California School of Fine Arts. Desde 1913, año de su primera exposicion, no paro de trabajar y exponer hasta su muerte en 1976. Su popularidad se mantiene intacta hasta la fecha, con una posicion destacada entre los grandes maestros de la fotografia.
