I've recently been looking into making more Chinese New Year crafts together as a way to celebrate the upcoming holiday. With my current infatuation with watercolor crafts, we recently made these watercolor painted paper fans together. Watercolor Painted Paper Fans This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support! Our Favorite Chinese New Year Books Prior to making the craft, we had already been reading books explaining the holiday. Here are some of our favorites! The Runaway Wok Bringing In the New Year My First Chinese New Year Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year Celebrating Chinese New Year Is it just me or are watercolor crafts like the best? The colors are always so vibrant and it's easy to make lovely, colorful art (and it doesn't require much clean up or prep too- score!) We've recently been going through some transitions over here when I gave birth to my second son. He's been such a gift to our family, but navigating transitions (even good ones) have never been my strong point. Luckily, painting and crafting make me feel happy... so I really enjoyed making these beautiful fans! Materials Needed: Ok, all you need for this craft are: Paper (We use drawing paper for the watercolors, but you can just use plain old computer paper too if you decide to go another route.) Other drawing tools (Markers, Crayons, these cool twistable crayons, Sharpies) Stapler Tape Let's Make Some Watercolor Painted Paper Fans You could go 3 routes when making these fans. Option 1: You could just draw/paint whatever comes to mind.... I made this design by drawing a bunch of dots randomly on the page with Sharpie marker and then connecting them with lines to make triangles. I find geometric shapes to be quite modern and aesthetically pleasing, don't you? Then, I just painted all the shapes in. Option 2: Plan a specific Design- Think in halves! Or, you could try to make a specific design on the fan. We'll be folding these fans in half, so imagine the paper divided in half and draw two different designs on each half. I also wanted to make a dragon fan for Chinese New year, so I drew this pattern out. (You can download it over here Chinese New Year Dragon Printable Fan ). When it's folded it makes a completed dragon fan. My son really liked this one, so he spent most of the time coloring it in... and then telling me that he didn't want to turn it into a fan. Oh well! Once you've finished your design, accordion fold it. Then, fold it in half. Staple yourself a handle and tape the two sides together. Spread your fan out and admire your completed design! Oh! Here's what the stripey design looked like folded. I went a bit crazy with painting and made several. Aren't they pretty? Option 3: Fold first, then paint! And... if you want to, you could also just fold up a bunch of these first and then paint them. That's another option too! (The stripey fan on the lower right corner was painted that way.) Another cute fan craft: Now if you liked making this paper fan craft, you should also check out my folding popsicle stick fans. They're a bit more work, but they also are a bit cooler because you can open and close them! Hope you have a fun time making these with your kiddos. Let's Keep in Contact! You can always find more fun ideas on my Pinterest, Facebook, or Instagram accounts! Happy making!

When I was going through my stickers to find a teensy heart for 'The Kissing Hand' raccoon, I came across some opossum (possum?) stickers I'd forgotten I had. There aren't a lot of opossum (possum?) crafts out there, so I decided to make one. I'm always on the lookout for topics that aren't represented on Fun Family Crafts and a quick search determined we had neither opossums nor possums on the site. Once I did the research to learn the difference between an opossum and a possum, I proceeded, confident that the stickers were opossums and that's what I'd be making. Cardboard Tube Opossum Materials: cardboard tube grey paint scissors white cardstock grey cardstock glue pink colored pencil pink mini pom pom (or white pom pom + pink chalk) googly eyes pink pipe cleaner tape Start by painting the cardboard tube grey. While it is drying, cut a narrow, elongated heart from white cardstock. When the paint is dry, glue the heart onto the end of the tube. A rubber band holds it in place while it's drying. (See the opossum stickers?) Cut a pair of skinny arms and a pair of skinny legs from the grey cardstock. Cut two rounded ears from the grey cardstock and use the colored pencil to add pink shading to the centers. Bend them up slightly. Glue the arms, legs and ears in place. Add the googly eyes and the pink pom pom nose. Finally, bend the pipe cleaner to make a tail. Secure it inside the tube with tape or hot glue. A completed opossum! I'm glad it's an opossum and not a possum because that means it goes in Letter O which is more sparse than Letter P. It's the little things.

Hello again! It's Megan from Homemade Ginger and I think you will just love today's craft! When spring comes around, I always get in the mood to declutter. The kids toys seem to multiply every year even though I rarely buy them any toys. How does this happen? I love to just clear out the clutter and start the summer with a more fresh and simple space for the family. I am always amazed at how well my kids do after we have donated a lot of their toys. They really do only need a few things to keep them

Science meets art in these amazing Alexander Calder Art Projects for Kids! Play with lines, shapes and colors to make beautiful sculptures and paintings! "To an engineer, good enough means perfect. With an artist, there's no such thing as perfect." When you think of artists, we think of slightly eccentric souls, wandering along lakes or forests with their art materials, trying to capture that elusive sun beam or bloom. The last think you'd expect is an artist who's gone and studied something as practical as mechanical engineering! But that's Alexander Calder, American artist. He's not one to fit into any kind of mould, and his works of art aren't just hung up on a wall or standing on a pedestal - they actually move! Now you see how the engineering part fits in! What you see here is Calder's famous work, the 'Cirque Calder' or Calder Circus. What you don't see here is that all the parts of this circus can move - from the performers to the animals. And that is exactly what makes Calder's work so special and unique. He was also a man of many talents; along with sculpting and painting, he also designed jewelry, rugs, tapestries and sets - he even painted an entire airplane! Alexander, or Sandy, was from a family of artists. His father and grandfather were sculptors and his mother a portrait artist. Young Sandy's first sculpture was a clay elephant, when he was four years old. He started out making jewelry for his sister's dolls and then went on to design jewelry for other well known artists and their families - Joan Miro, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall and Peggy Guggenheim. With 22nd July being Calder's birthday, we think it's the perfect time to introduce kids to this amazing artist and his works, with some fun and simple Alexander Calder art projects for kids.
