Based in Austria, Natalia Lubieniecka scours Vienna’s markets for antique objects, fabrics, and anatomical posters that eventually inform and meld into her peculiar sculptures. Whether it be a blush-colored heart enveloped in florals, a supine frog with exposed entrails, or a deceased bird covered in a lace bodice, her fantastical works speak to the fragile relationship between life and death. The sculptor tells Colossal that her interest in organs and bodies began after a visit to Naturhistorische Museum Wien, where she encountered taxidermy of birds, insects, and other animals. More

Like many Korean families, artist Ema Shin’s relatives maintain a genealogy book called a jokbo, which illustrates their family tree. Shin’s ancestral record spans 32 generations, yet only male members of the family are represented. Born and raised in Japan, and currently based in Melbourne, Australia, the artist describes in a recent statement that “in the society that I was born and raised in, there was a prejudice between men and women, and their roles were predetermined. If you are following The Paper Heart blog, you know my idea about a Capsule craft collection. And how inspiring it is for me to work and experiment with a purposely limited number of craft materials and tools. So, you know how much I am advocating buying less to create more for yourself. In this article I will show you how easy it is to make paper scrapbook embellishments using limited, only white, watercolour paper and a limited number of tools. The most important and essential tool here is my Sizzix Big shot machine, and I don’t think there is…

This fiber textile art wall hanging has nine hand embroidered 5.5" squares of upcycled and hand-dyed cheesecloth, organza, cotton and linen fabric with embellishments of ceramic, metal, wood, embroidered threads, trims, and hung from driftwood. The top patches include hand-dyed , loose woven cottons and linens, vintage buttons, trims, metal bits and lots of embroidery. The middle squares include upcycled hand-embroidered and hand dyed fabrics (organza, vintage linen, cotton and upholstery), vintage buttons, a metal clip and lots of embroidery. The third layer has upcycled hand-dyed gauze and woven cotton and trim, metal pieces, ceramics and vintage button and trim. Each of the layers is mounted on cream cotton with couched yarns as accents. This would make a fabulous housewarming, wedding present or just a surprise for the love in your life. Its varied textures, colors and patterns lend a meditative quality to this collaged and hand sewn art piece. Is also great in a nursery or bedroom as it is lightweight and ready-to hang from the drift wood beaded with African and black beads.

This is one of my all time favourite pieces that I have done with a class. I adore Klimt and came up with this idea that involves: Splodging a watered down golden/brown acrylic paint for the background. On another piece of paper paint flowers using three different colours using water colours then paint green background, cut the piece of paper to form a wavy top. Take a photo of the child in a 'Klimt' position- either sleeping or a calm face. Using a laser colour printer, print the photo's and glue them onto a piece of A3 cartridge. Sketch the outline shape of the hood and cloak. Here is where you talk alot about proportion, pattern and shape. Show the children a variety of painting techniques including, scraffido (scratching the paint with a toothpick or end of the paintbrush), collage- layering pre painted papers and pointillism (dots). Ask the children to include patterns that Klimt used eg. circles/ ovals, rectangles, eyes, flowers and swirls. Paint all the sections with a background colour first, then add the different techniques in each, being mindful not to have the same two beside each other. Ones all complete, allow the children to choose if they would like to add black/gold lines between their sections- adding dots on the lines can be quite effective as well as in the hair. Cut out the self portrait and glue onto the background of gold splodging and water coloured flowers. Add flowers and tassels in the hair or side of the cloak using gold paper and premade painted paper. And there you have it- Klimt Inspirations

A couple of years ago when I was running my Etsy shop I used to make these polymer clay embellishments for scrap pages. I thought I'd take today to show you all how to make these unique little embellishments, they work beautifully with the Bo Bunny Metal Trinkets! The assignment today was to create a Signs of Spring layout with the new Alora collection. I used a photo I took a couple of years ago in the spring of Meagan on the monkey bars at the park....to me, a sign that Spring is in the air is when the kiddies can go without coats, hat, mitts... Although I have to say we are having crazy warm weather here for Spring, it's almost unheard of to have the kids going to school in shorts in March! Today is another balmy 85 degrees! crazy for this time of year here in Ontario! Okay so for the tutorial.....You will need.... ~Polymer Clay, Sculpy, Fimo or Store Brand (I used black) ~Pearlex or Perfect Pearls (Mica Powder...I bought the Pearlex Series2 12 pack ages ago and still have loads of it left....The colors I used were Turquois, Aztec Gold and Spring Green) ~Bo Bunny Metal Trinkets and Jewels ~Blade knife for trimming Step #1: Soften and roll out a 1" piece of black polymer clay (I used black because I feel like the colors of Pearlex show up nicely against it). Cut a heart shape out with a blade knife. Now take a small piece of the black clay and roll out into a thin strip, and roll out a number of small ball shapes. Apply to the piece with gentle pressure (when it bakes it adheres well to the base piece) Step #2: Using a paint brush apply the Turquoise Pearlex (Mica Powder) to the base of the piece (I used two colours....see below). Be sure to get the Pearlex right to the edges. Step #3: You can add an additional color in and just softly blend them . Step #4: Using your finger, dab it in the Pearlex and just run it along the raised design you created, this is my favourite part, the contrast of the metalic colors is just magical! ....You can add your metal accents now if you wish but don't add your jewels to it unless they are glass because they will melt in the oven when you bake off the piece. Bake in a 275 F oven for 15 minutes (use a disposable foil tray for this, you don't want to use something that you will later cook with) Step #5: Once my piece has cooled I spray it with a protective clear coat (I couldn't find old clear coat spray so I used some hairspray and it worked well!) Now you can add any pearl or gem accents and glue on your metal accents if you didn't bake them with the piece. I recomment that you spray the back of the piece with a protective coat in order to protect the scrap paper incase any residual oils come off of the polymer clay. Experiment with different shapes, try using stamps and small and large glass beads. Here are just a few of the designs I created using just some clay, Pearlex, stamps and glass beads. TIP: (the trick to making a straight line with the glass beads is to string them on a piece of wire, push them into the clay and then pull out the wire strand leaving the beads behind in the clay) I hope I've inspired you to give it a go! Have a fun scrappy week! xx
My niece and I spent a relaxing Sunday afternoon making embellishments for cards. We used leftover bits and pieces from my scrap bins. We also tried a different technique -- emboss resist! (You can find a tutorial for that here.) Supplies and Tools: KRAFT cardstock, Tattered Florals Die (Tim Holtz), Quilling Tool, Puzzle Die (Sizzix), Paper Crimper (Fiskars), Script Stamp, Versamark, Clear Embossing Powder, Assorted Dye Inks, Circle punch, Square Punch, Twine, Pearls, Blossom Nestabilities, Leaf Punch (Martha Stewart), Paperwork Greetings (Inkadinkado) This post linked to: Kraft Journal - What's on your work table (I usually keep my desk clean with nothing but my lamp, clock, and a bin of "tools" on it [see photo below] - BUT today these embellishments were sitting on it waiting to be photographed, blogged about, and put away)
Few creative things today are truly new — it's the work that builds on, pushes forward and continues to invent that gets noticed.
Hi all and wow its July! I know I say it every month but this year is just flying and makes me so grateful that I am documenting all these memories that are just flying by. This month I am revisiting a technique that I often use when I am in the mood to be […]
