Hello and welcome! September is a very special month at Simon Says Stamp because that is when STAMPtember® is celebrated. There will be many fun things happening this whole month, don't miss them! At Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we are kicking off STAMPtember® with a Stamping All Stars challenge. Use your favourite stamps, ink or types of stamps, and more. I am not good at picking favourites, especially among stamps, there are simply too many that I love. I had to narrow it down somehow and decided to go through my Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous stamps and pick out the ones that I used the most. The pop-up tag was started without much of a plan, just using those favourite stamps of mine. Pop-ups are another favourite and I used the Sizzix Circle & Ribbon Platform. The base is manila cardstock, die cut in the Tag & Bookplates die, folding the top edge and placing it just under the top cutting line on the die, so that I got a tag shaped card. I used other favourites here too, from the surfaces I worked on, to the dies and the inks. I love Tim's wood stamp and clear embossed it on all sides of the tag. The tag was inked with brown shades of Distress Inks, keeping it lighter towards the centre. I did the faux batik technique and ironed off the embossing powder (always place the paper between printer paper to protect your iron and ironing board). The bottom edge isn't embossed, but I wasn't worrying about that since I was planning to cover it up anyway. I stamped the background with several favourite stamps, to create even more texture. I love the bird stamp from the Mini Ornates set and the little bird stamp from Tiny Things. They were stamped with Archival Jet Black. My favourite alphabet background stamp, from School Desk, was stamped with Coffee Archival ink, holding it in my hand instead of mounting on an acrylic block, for a random impression. This alphabet background is probably my most used stamp of all time. Finally, I stamped the background here and there with a dot texture stamp and embossed with platinum powder. Tiny Textures is another set that I reach for all the time. The letters were die cut with the Wanted die and the tree was die cut from Bazzill text paper. The Circle Platform base was die cut from kraft-core cardstock, which is also a favourite. The base was stamped with the alphabet stamp and a grid stamp. The circle and ribbons were die cut from manila cardstock. The circle was stamped with the ledger stamp from School Desk, which I love, using Pumice Stone ink and then one of my favourite sentiment stamps was stamped on top. The fun dimensional ribbons were inked with Peeled Paint and stamped with a grid stamp. I also added a little photo booth photo of my dad, sister and me, placed on top of a postage stamp die cut. This is the front part of the inside, with a small pine tree, a swirl embossed in platinum powder and a left-over UTEE covered flower (from my Summer Memories Burlap Panel). I felt like some bling, and used a green tinsel, over tissue tape. The fabulous sentiment comes from Cosmo Cricket. Here you can see what the pop-up looks like from the top. It's fun with the ribbons, and very easy to do. I used it on this card too. The front of the tag card is pretty similar to the inside, with the same stamped background. I really like Tim's sentiment stamps and here I stamepd one of them on cream cardstock, which had first been inked, stamped with a ledger stamp and Pumice Stone and die cut with the Torn Notebook die. Combining the ledger stamp from School Desk and the Torn Notebook die is a great way of making your own distressed notebook pages. I layered a Bazzill vintage text paper behind it. The crinkle ribbon was dyed with Peeled Paint and Crushed Olive. The Hinge Clip was embossed with Stampendous Aged Silver Embossing Enamel, giving it a cool look. Be careful, metal gets very hot when you emboss it. The border was embellished with grass die cut from kraft-core cardstock with the Tapered Fringe die and another piece of tinsel. I had a leftover modeling film/natural sticky-back canvas butterfly, from my Summer Memories Burlap Panel (check the post out to see how I made it) and also tucked a Prima wooded leave and more platinum embossed swirls in among the grass. Join us this week in our fun challenge and it can be you who wins the $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp, or gets picked to be featured as one of our Designer Spotlights. Hi crafters! Today I have a tag to share using inks to create a lot of texture and layers. Please note: this post has affiliate links, for which I receive a small percentage of sales generated by the link, at no extra cost to you. Simon Says Stamp has a brand new release called Just For You and this tag was made with products from that release. I wanted to create something of a magical mushroom forest using the new Mushroom Stems die set. The Just For You release has a great mix of stamps, dies, stencils and other products which are great for both Easter, spring-time and other themes. There is even a pair of Pawsitively Everyday Scissors. I started by white embossing one of the pretty Simon Says Stamp Leaf Edges stamps on a tag. Smear Distress Inks on a non-stick craft sheet, mist with water and press the tag into the ink. Let dry. Repeat to get deeper colors and more texture. I added one more layer of Distress Ink after this photo and then finished with a tiny bit of Distress Oxide ink. I missed taking a photo of that step unfortunately. Die cut the Simon Says Stamp Mushroom Stems twice from heavystock paper. Press Lost Shadow and Frayed Burlap on a non-stick craft sheet, mist with water and press the mushroom parts into the ink. I used mainly Lost Shadow. Color the hats in the same way using various colors. Let dry and then repeat the process once or twice with Distress Ink. If you only touch the paper to the ink you get a splotchy appearance. As with the background, I did a final layer using Distress Oxide inks, but only in a few areas of the images. Shape the mushrooms with Tim Holtz Shaping kit and adhere the colorful hats with Simon Says Stamp Pawsitively Perfect Foam Tape. Dye May Arts Wrinkled Faux Silk Ribbon with Distress Ink, mist with water and crinkle. I adhered the mushrooms to the tag with more foam tape. The sentiments were stamped with Simon Says Stamp Forest Scenery, which wasn't a part of the new release. Here you can see the effect of the opaque Distress Oxide inks. I also used Simon Says Stamp Pretty Pastel sequins. You can make these mushrooms in any color imaginable. I dyed cheese cloth to form soil or undergrowth for the mushrooms. The small mushrooms are so cute. We had lovely sunny weather today, even though there is still some snow left. I am looking forward to spring-time in the forest. The tag has quite a bit of dimension. There will be more Just For You inspiration here on Saturday. Happy stamping! Having a rummage about in the lace baskets I found lots of odd bits which I haven't been able to bear to throw away - (I was obviously a squirrel in a former life) - I dragged out a few scraps and left them out on the desk as I have had this idea rattling round in my head and wanted it all to 'come together' before I made a mess of making something - - and the reason why I didn't want to spoil anything is the centrepiece - it was made by the lovely Caz and it came with fab candy stash which I was fortunate enough to win! Originally I didn't want to use either of the two gorgeous hand made brooches from the candy pile - they're just too beautiful but it seemed a shame not to - at least this way the tag can sit out on display in my craft room and be seen! So thank you Caz - and I hope I've done your creation justice! I inked the tag with Old paper, Vintage Photo and Worn Lipstick DI, then randomly stamped some script over it. (Can't see this very well on the pic but trust me it's there!) I covered the whole of the tag then with some old lace which had a fancy edge and stitched it, then just added more and more odd scraps, stitching them all as I went along. The brooch was then pinned to the centre and I cut out a vintage pic and popped it into a metal frame, covered it with Glossy Accents and stitched to the base of the tag. The 'believe' was another scrap found in the lace basket and I raised it up slightly by arching it before stitching the ends. Used some seam binding ribbon and more odd lace looped through the top. Am putting this into Pixies Snippets Playground this week to earn some brownie points for using up odds and ends! 2016 Topic 19: Die Cuts Eileen Godwin Well hello everyone, Darcy here with another new topic for you get your teeth into or rather get your cutting machines into. For the next two weeks we will be exploring die cut shapes, and the ways that they can be used. did you know that PaperArtsy have their very own line of metal dies. There are a good selection, everything from flowers to leaves, birds and hearts. They cut beautifully and work on regular smoothy, waxy, tissue paper, sheer fabrics, card, grungepaper, and even a metal-humungo-card sandwich. Some of the PaperArtsy die also coordinate with stamps, so look out for the ones that match up. Often just the die cut image will be used as an embellishment, but these shapes are excellent to use at masks too, and don't forget the 'negative' space left behind. The 'hole' in your leftover card can be used as a stencil, this means you get a lot more value from your dies. Here you can see that Wanda has used the negative card left behind from using a PaperArtsy flower die, these leftovers were turned into a great little niche. Wanda Hentges Before we start, let's see who won the Topic 18: Autumn Leaves Challenge... The winner of Autumn Leaves is: Raquel from Scrapcosy Email Darcy to claim your prize. [email protected] Some of you may be very familiar with dies and die cutting machines, but other people maybe not so much. Paper and fabric have always been shaped either by hand or with knives or scissors, but when it comes to tougher substrates such as leather and metal then more specific tools are needed for the job. Once humans were able to extract metal from rocks skilled people were needed to from this metal into usable or decorative objects. The ancient Greeks used dies and punches to create coinage. This continued well into the middle ages, the most common method needed two die, one a positive image and the other a negative image. A blank piece of metal was placed between the two dies and the sandwich was struck with a heavy hammer. Even today we use the term 'coins being struck' By the 15th century dies and punches were being used in machines, and in 1796 a Frenchman obtained a patent for dies specifically for punching sheet metal. Throughout the first part of the 20th century dies continued to be used by companies wishing to mass produce their own products. These products were of course not images for art, they were industrial products used in engineering. These methods of precision stamping and punching are still used on a huge scale to produce components for almost everything that we use. Within the art and crafts industries we began to use dies to create multiple shapes, quickly and with more precision than using a knife or scissors. These dies meant that we could cut paper, card, leather, fabric, foam, thin plastics etc. within the leather industry these dies became important in making shoes and gloves, it became possible for many more pieces to be cut that were all of an accurate size. Just look at these dies for making gloves! As the need for decorative embellishments increased so did the variety of die shapes available, and now we have access to almost every shape imaginable. These can be used to cut just one layer or multiples and it has transformed the accuracy of hand made items. For those that hate to 'fussy cut' or have difficulties with hand cutting, the die cutting systems have become a vital part of the tool kit. Here is a great video tutorial from Leandra, showing how easy it is to cut some metal flowers and then stamp the shapes with the corresponding stamps. Helen Chilton is a regular on this blog and she loves to experiment, so when given the challenge to see what she could do with the PaperArtsy dies she came up with a ton of ways to use them. check out her whole post HERE. Die cut shapes can be all kinds of intricate, take a look at this card. Can you imagine cutting one delicate butterfly out by hand , never mind three? Using a die makes this quick and painless. Tobi Crawford Similarly with this so very delicate Memory Box die, I don't mind a bit of fussy cutting, but this would defeat me. Let the die do all the hard work. Val So now we know that dies are great for cutting delicate images, what else can we use them for. tis piece by Kay is a perfect example, Here she has used her die cuts in the background of her project and painted over them, they have turned into the most fabulous texture. Kay In the same way Eileen has layered up die cuts onto an MDF butterfly to create this stunning and very textural effect. If you fancy having a go she has all the details on her blog HERE. We saw earlier how the negative shape can be built into a niche, but even just one layer can provide a window on a card, as on this card by Meghan. Another window effect here, a totally different look from the one above just with the addiction of bright coloured paper behind the shaped hole. Amy Ryall Again using the negative space left in your card, this tutorial shows just how to build up colour using the negative as a stencil. Kittie Caracciolo Once you have used the stencil part of your die cutting, time to use the actual cut out images to build up your scene, till you achieve this fabulous 3d card. Kittie Caracciolo We often want instant art, especially when we need a card in a hurry, this is where dies really come in useful, for creating instant embellishments. they don't need to be fancy or intricate, simple letters like the ones below have a lot of impact when repeated and a punchy colour is introduced. Amy Kolling Bolder, chunkier die cuts also have great impact, see how Ellen Vargo has used these cog dies to great effect on this tag. Here you can see how the die cut image has been used as a mask, temporarily glued to a jar and then paint applied around the shape. Very clever. Laurie How about making your own foam stamps from die cuts, just layer up several die cuts, glue them together and Voila! you have stamps. Tim Holtz There are all kinds of neat tricks that you can do with dies, this technique is dry embossing. Sara See how Sara turned that into this lovely tag. Nothing could be simpler than die cut circles, but see how Anya has layered them up into a Snowman! Never overlook the basic shapes, they can end up being your best tools. Anya Schrier Take your dies to another level and use shrink plastic, then like Kimberly Crawford you can create beautiful and sturdy little buttons. There are so many ways to use dies, the negative cuts and the positive cuts. This applies to the dies used in hand operated machines and also to the electronic machines. If you don't have a die cutter of any sort then why take another look at your punches, see if you can come up with some interesting ways to use your punched images and also the negatives left behind. Think outside the die, and see what you can create! Try die cutting into another die cut! We look forward to seeing what ideas you come up with. Don't forget to follow Darcy and Leandra's Pinterest boards if this topic pushes your buttons, you will see plenty more examples to whet your appetite there! I am really looking forward to seeing what you create over the next 2 weeks! What's on my desk? Although Tim's tag was inspired by the US celebrations for the 4th July I originally wanted to keep to the red. white and blue theme and make a UK patriotic tag but it didn't work out. So I went a bit more vintage. Using mini blueprints 4 I chose the vintage desk items and followed Tim's directions to colour up and make the tag stamping onto watercolour paper and using distress markers and a water brush to colour them in. I applied micro glaze like Tim shows us, it does a brilliant job of sealing the distress inks and I love the distressed effects that can be achieved when you paint inks over it. My design changes here with the addition of remnant rubs and ideaology. I will link you to Tim's blog where you will be able to see his patriotic version and all the process steps that you can follow if you want to join in his monthly tag contributions. Today I've rounded up 10 Pretty Paper Tags! All of these pretty crafts and projects were created using Vintage Graphics from my site. These projects have been posted on my site in the past, and now I'd like to share them in one place so you don't have to search for them!
Good morning everyone! Well Monday has rolled around again and I'm getting ready to begin my week. I just wanted to share a tag I've been working on. Those of you who follow me, know how much I love making flowers and roses are a favorite of mine. I like tags because they can be tucked down inside a gift bag and given to someone special. They take just as much work as a card, but I think they are just in a class of their own. For my tag, I used the Tim Holtz Alterations die and then ran it though my Cuttlebug with an embossing folder; then I used Ranger Distress Ink to go over some of the raised edges. My roses were made by cutting out petals using the Spellbinders Rose Creations Die and the leaves were made using the Spellbinders Foliage die. The roses were made using plain white card stock and I inked the petals with Ranger Distress Inks and shaped the petals then glued them together. I used a gold leafing pen to add just a touch of gold to the petals of the flowers. Just a tiny bit .... I didn't want to lose any of the elegance of the flower. The petals were edged in Distress Inks and spritzed with water then crumpled to shape and give them some shape. I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed doing it. Making flowers just seems to make me a happy girl. Have a great day and a wonderful week and I hope you can find a little time to create.

This is my design piece for the Stamp Man challenge this week and the lovely Frankie has chosen the theme 'Travel'. Since I just came back off holiday you would think this would be easy for me - but no, it tested my imagination again. Hurry up Mr Mojo and give me some spontaneity. Inspiration has come from these challenges - Simon Says Stamp and Show is also travel, Take a Word - Old fashioned (the plane certainly is) and The Paper Variety has another travel theme. Anyway I created a tag card. On the front I glued some TH atlas paper then swooshed it a bit in paints and dry stippled some over it too. Then I spritzed with gold mist. Over that I blended DIs and edged the whole card with vintage photo. I've stamped the sentiment and other bits straight onto the card and stamped the plane onto copper metal, made a tape sandwich with strong card and cut it out, sealing the edges with a metal tool. Using a trinket pin, I added a philosophy tag to the ribbon. I used the stains and spritz for the inside of the card and made it look like a place for the correspondence with a MME stamp and using a TH 'post card' stamp as well. I have a friend having her 60th birthday coming up, so I might use this as her birthday card as she just loves to travel. Supplies TH paper stash - crowded attic TH die - tag Adirondack paint dabber - smidge of blue, yellow pastel Crown metallic paint - refresh TH stamps - air travel Cosmic Shimmer - rich gold DIs - shabby shutters, scattered straw, vintage photo Archival Ink - black Moon Glow spritz - horny toad teal Starburst Stains - pulpit teal, sea mint green I hope you will pop over to the challenge blog to see all the wonderful creations from the amazing team and hopefully you will find the inspiration to take part. Don't forget there is a £10 voucher for the Stamp Man shop for the lucky winner chosen by the DT. Have a wonderful weekend, I am off to Birmingham to celebrate an 18th birthday. luv and hugs {brenda} xoxox
Do you like gift tags? I love them. Big or small, simple or elaborately even overly decorated… Actually there is no such thing as an “overly decorated gift tag”. It is amazing how, in so little space, you can create and say so many “words”. The best thing with gift tags is that you can use even the smallest pieces of paper in your craft collection. I started doing exactly this in the process of creating my huge paper… um… carefully chosen selection of lovely, beautiful pieces, which I didn’t want to use, because of their beauty. If you read…
Hi everyone! Today I am sharing my versions of Tim Holtz 12 tags of 2013 August. I love masking techniques and how much dimension you can get on a flat surface with these techniques. I made two tags. For the first tag, I used London images from the Paris to London set, which I hadn't inked up yet. The background was done with Antique Linen, Frayed Burlap and Victorian Velvet Distress Stain. Big Ben, the man, the car and the crown on top of the car were all masked. I don't have Tim's masking sheets, instead I used Eclipse tape. The flag was perfect for stamping with markers, since it looks really good stamped in red and blue. For the rest of the background stamping I used a shipping stamp, partly because I travelled by boat twice to go and visit London. It was inked with Barn Door, Faded Jeans and Black Soot distress markers. I also used a postage stamp. 'London' was first inked with Frayed Burlap and then I dragged a Black Soot marker around the edges before stamping, which is a fun technique to do with these types of bold stamps. I also added a game spinner. The tiny tag was die cut from mat board, inked and a Chit Chat sticker was adhered on top. On the second tag, I travelled to Paris. The background was done with Antique Linen, Frayed Burlap and Brushed Pewter Distress Stain. The Eiffel Tower and the hot-air balloon were masked and a Paris text stamp, a fleur-de-lie, a postage stamp and Bon Voyage were stamped on top, with Barn Door, Faded Jeans and Black Soot Distress Markers. The background was inked with Frayed Burlap, Walnut Stain and Fired Brick. After removing the mask, I added some ink between the ropes of the balloon, so that it would look more natural, another option would have been to have masked the basket and the balloon separately. I love the look of the masked flag and how it stands out from the background. The tag was die cut from mat board and inked. I also added a little clothes hanger. The Eiffel Tower really looks dimensional and not as if it is part of the same one layer tag. A metallic fleur-de-lie finished the tag. Here are both tags together. Thank you for stopping by!! Happy stamping! Say what you're really thinking with these funny Christmas gift tags! These printable gift tags will make the recipient laugh out loud.
I love the mixed media feel to Tim's tag this month and especially the gold contrasted with the gorgeous paints, but I found the effects really difficult to achieve. My embossing powder stuck to the background as well as the texture paste no matter how long I heat dried it - I think I shall try it again but leave the tag to dry overnight.. So, as is me, I played around and decided to dry the embossing paste and then use an embossing pen to add the ink and the gold powder. This gave me a completely different look but one that I really quite like. You can also see I added some gold EP to the dragonfly wings and some remnant tubs to finish it off. Thanks Tim for another fabulous opportunity to try something different but also a peek into your very inspiring creative mind. Have a great weekend everyone. hugs Brenda xxx
