The Internet seems to be overflowing with cuteness but this time it's neither children nor cat videos. Surprising, I know! But what can be better than food combined with unbearably cute fan art?

Léon François Comerre (10 October 1850 - 20 February 1916) was a French academic painter, famous for his portraits of beautiful women. Comerre was born in Trélon, in the Département du Nord, the son of a schoolteacher. He moved to Lille with his family in 1853. From an early age he showed an interest in art and became a student of Alphonse Colas at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille, winning a gold medal in 1867.

Akiya Kageichi is a Japanese illustrator who calls himself Golden Gravel, a name which may refer to Japanese rock gardens. His sinister jesters, lazy rulers and clandestine warriors are set within scenes full of chaotic imagery. Astrological symbols, particularly moons, are heavily prominent, suggesting the mysterious forces of dark nights are at work. In a single plane, objects morph, creating dynamic and active scenes. Kageichi reveals hidden underworlds and secret futures, in which sorcery and witchcraft pull the strings and determine what happens in the real world.

There is a level of normal which most of us are used to. The hyper perverted work of TOSHIO SAEKI pushes the boundaries to the outer limits of what you might be comfortable with. His drawings are psychosexual storms of madness that make you ask, what the fuck am I looking at? Some of his pieces will make you cringe and others will put a little smile on your face…
One of the great Japanese woodblock artists, Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) was especially noted for his exquisitely detailed, evocative prints of landscapes around the world. His work is beautiful, subtle and often atmospheric, displaying a real mastery of his technique, which allowed him to capture the subtleties of light and form. Yoshida often reused the same woodblocks, varying the colours and saturation to suggest alternate moods of the same scene – a different time of day, or even different weather conditions. Initially trained as a painter (of some renown), Yoshida began working with woodblocks in the early 1920s, and after a meeting with the owner of the Watanabe Print Store in Tokyo he had his first series of prints published. The woodblock technique is notoriously time-consuming and difficult, but Yoshida seemed able to capture the most delicate graduations of colour and the tiniest details in a temple façade or mountain face. Yoshida was a keen traveller and visited numerous countries from the early 1900s onwards - his cosmopolitan attitude is reflected in the landscapes and studies he created in countries like India and America. The traditional Japanese techniques in his work applied to a changing foreign world at the beginning of the 20th Century make for some fascinating, unexpected images, which sit comfortably alongside his more elegiac landscapes. Whilst the world has changed almost immeasurably in the 50 or so years since Yoshida died, when viewed today, well-kept examples of his woodblocks still have a real vibrancy and warmth to them. Yoshida died in 1950 but his two sons Toshi and Hodaka both became respected woodblock artists in their own right, carrying on the family tradtion. In fact, since the mid-1800s the same Yoshida family - Hiroshi's forebears - has produced eight artists of serious renown – a veritable woodblock dynasty. Takato Yamamoto's art seems serene and calm at first, but when you take a closer look you notice their dark themes. The japanese born painter focuses on sexual and rather shocking content. His very detailed, melancholic illustrations often have a person as a subject, surrounded by nature. Here are our favourites!

Red Cross Nurses were a symbol of modernity and of Japan’s commitment to humanitarian ideals, during the Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905). Postcards reflected this by updating the age old tradition of Bijin-e (pictures of beautiful women). This postcard is from the “Thousand Contemporary Figures” series.
