Looking for homeschool art curriculum? We tried out Volume 1 of Art for Children by ARTistic Pursuits. Here's how we used it.
We did two or three lessons a week. I chose to skip around in the book because I wanted us to have a chance to experience a variety of lessons for the review period. The lessons are really meant to build on each other however. So it would be better to go through them in

You may wonder, how long does it take to become an artist? We answer this question and many more in our complete guide.
I love art, but I am not much of an artist. I enjoy crafts, painting and coloring, but I know nothing of technique to teach my kids. I have struggled to be consistent with teaching
This review was originally published in June 2018 at our Gypsy Road site. If you've followed this blog for more than a few days, then you know these kids are all about some ancient history! We have ancient history Legos, and all of our literature and geography courses are centered on ancient history....heck, we even did a science course that focused on it! So when Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray curriculum, including the Art of the Ancients art course, they were super excited! Granted, this is a course designed for kindergarten through 3rd graders, and they are a little bit older than that, but they still enjoyed it. The course comes in a slim hardcover book, with two DVDs (one regular and one blu-ray), that fits perfectly on any shelf and looks very nice. It focuses on the art of the cultures that grew up along the Mediterranean. There's even a note inside about this, with a nod toward other ancient cultures that were not included simply due to keeping it a short and simple book for younger students. If you'd like to see more about this course, peek inside the book further, or see clips of the video lessons, check out the video review! The course begins with the cave drawings of France and winds through ancient Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire. It includes art history, geographical history, and art instruction. There are eighteen lessons in total - twelve in the text, and six on the video disc. One thing that I really appreciate about this course, from a mom's organizational perspective, is that the discs are stored right inside the book. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up a course book only to find that I'd misplaced the discs... The materials used in the lessons are often simple, everyday materials that you'll have in your home. There are also basic art supplies that most homeschools are stocked with, including crayons, pastels, clay, colored pencils, and colored paper. A few lessons call for specific supplies, such as a clay wire cutter, but we simply used a knife and washed it well. In the lesson about Egyptian murals, we learned about ancient Egyptian culture, the pyramids, and the murals inside of the pyramids. Taking the lead from the example in the book, everyone created a 'modern day mural,' focusing on the everyday things that each does. One of them is fishing, chicken-wrangling, doing schoolwork, and walking around. Another is taking a boat ride (apparently, his dream day), while the last is completing schoolwork, biking, reading with her brother, and playing outside. The video lessons are quite simple to follow. Like the book, they open with a lesson about the world around us and how this particular art lesson relates to that. Then they go through the art project step by step, with natural breaks in it for the video to be paused while your student completes that step. Finally, they do a quick review of every step in the project. In this video lesson, we created Roman mosaics -- one is an airplane and one is a parrot. While I feel that this course was too young for my children - and it SHOULD be - they are in middle school and above, I also feel that it's just right for the intended audience, and could even be used with preschoolers. It will get children excited about history, while incorporating hands-on fun! See what others are saying about ARTistic Pursuits,Inc. at the Homeschool Review Crew!

ARTistic Pursuits has a great homeschool art program for your middle school kids. Parents don't need to be artists to help their kids do art.
Based in Oshawa, a suburb of Toronto, artist Toni Hamel (previously) is concerned with human morality—or lack thereof. In her subtly hued artworks, Hamel portrays subjects in the midst of futile and trivial pursuits: children pluck stars from the night sky, a couple attempts to reconstruct a flower after its petals have fallen, and a young family literally watches wet paint dry. Many of the satirical pieces consider socially accepted anthropocentrism and the relationship people have with the surrounding environment. More

We tried to do one lesson a week, but our clay did not come to us in the mail because of back-orders and delays with COVID-19. We did what we could with what we had at home. My kids love art so they enjoyed these activities and learning about the art and history very much. The lessons without videos have prep notes with tips and information about the type of art. It also has notes on how to instruct a larger group. Then there is the art history lesson on the next page with pictures of an art piece and questions at the end in bold. After the history lesson the book has a page of how to do the art. Each art lesson has a box of text that will list the materials needed for that art project, an example picture of the art made by a student, pictures of the art being assembled and instructions with more insight into the history. The lessons that have videos are truncated in the book and have a minimal amount of information to show you what art will be created and what materials are needed to make the art. These are used with the DVD or Blu-ray. ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Art of the Ancients, K-3 Vol. 2: Lesson 1 (something with wheels with pastels). The first lesson we had an introduction of art in the ancient world and learned how to use soft pastels to make a picture of something with wheels. This lesson was accompanied by a video (video #1) on the DVD or Blu-ray. This gave us very visual step-by-step instruction of the process. We liked the videos and thought they were very thorough, educational, and nicely done. The video had the art history and art instruction to show how to use the pastels. Zari did the Fire Truck. ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Art of the Ancients, K-3 Vol. 2: Lesson 2 (cave art). The second lesson in the book we learned about European cave drawings. We read in the art book of 4 boys in France that discovered some cave art. There are questions at the end in bold of the this art history lesson about the bull and horse cave painting in the book to make sure the children are paying attention to the art. Then we are told with words and shown with color pictures in the book how to do cave art on brown paper with earth colored pastels. I did the zebra and Teela did the panda bear. The third lesson we learned about clay slab building. This lesson was accompanied by a video (video #2) on the DVD or Blu-ray. This gave us very visual step-by-step instruction of the process. In this lesson you build a clay figure out of slabs. The video had the art and art instruction to show how to use and care for the clay and other items to make the figure. Since we didn't have the clay we just watched the video for the instructions for future reference. The forth lesson we learned about the city of Jericho and the Human Statue found there. There are questions at the end in bold of the this art history lesson in the book to make sure the children are paying attention to the art. Then we are told with words and shown with color pictures in the book how to do a human figure in clay. Since we didn't have the clay we just read the book and looked at the pictures for future reference. ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Art of the Ancients, K-3 Vol. 2: Lesson 5 (animal art with pastels). In the fifth lesson we learned about art in Minoan palaces. In this lesson we learned about a painting called Bull Jumping that was found in the Island of Crete. There are questions at the end in bold of the this art history lesson about the painting in the book to make sure the children are paying attention to the art. We were instructed to make an animal painting with pastels. I did the hedgehog and Zari did the Toucan. There was only one thing that I would change if I was the author. My daughters and I wished that all the lessons had videos because we are very visual and the videos made the instruction so much easier, but we would also have liked those that did have videos to have the whole instruction and art history lesson in the book as well. This would make it easier to use with those children that are too young to read and those that learn better by reading than by visual and audio as well would benefit if both were used for all lessons. This would help our learners of all types. So far ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray Art of the Middle Ages has been very educational and fun. We have learned so much about the art of the time. I highly recommend this art for children. ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray Art of the Ancients would be a great art curriculum for use with art history lessons and unit studies of the Early Europeans, Minoans, Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Etruscans, and Ancient Romans. While our family isn't an "artsy" family, we still enjoying doing art projects. I have collected a whole host of supplies to handle just about any type of art lesson that comes our way. We have reviewed several art programs before, and have discovered that we really enjoy the curriculum from ARTistic Pursuits Inc.. This company recently released a new collection of ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray to give an additional aspect to their already fabulous art program. We have been reviewing Art of the Middle Ages from this collection over the last several weeks. About ARTistic Pursuits ARTistic Pursuits Inc. is an art curriculum company believing that all children are able to understand the concepts of art, and enjoy putting ideas and visual images on paper. They are committed to helping children become observant in our world and to be able to work creatively in it. They are determined to offer parents and children a quality art education presented in an easy to understand format for both the teacher and child and gear their books towards the homeschooling community. Through their program, they encourage children to look at the expressive and technical aspects of art according to their age level. The goal is for the children to be able to be free to explore their world however they see it...not the way that adults think they should see it! There are no "rules" or "boundaries" in the art lessons--no small boxes or limitations. ARTistic Pursuits is all about letting them color outside the lines! ARTistic Pursuits offer curriculum for Preschool to High School age making it easy for you to find a curriculum just right for your school age child. The latest release from ARTistic Pursuits Inc., is a re-release of their K-3rd grade art instruction collection--this new collection WITH video lessons replaces their previous 2013 editions. These books include text lessons with picture study and video lessons on how to use the art materials. Each book comes with a DVD and a Blu-Ray for your convenience. The following books are included in this collection: Vol. 1 Art for Children, Building a Visual Vocabulary Vol. 2 Art of the Ancients Vol. 3 Art of the Middle Ages Vol. 4 Artists that Shaped the Italian Renaissance Vol. 5 Art of the Northern Countries, Renaissance to Realism Vol. 6 Art of the Impressionists Vol. 7 Art of the Modern Age (coming Summer 2018) Vol. 8 Art in America (coming Summer 2018) Each of these books is available for purchase alone, or with an art supply pack which will provide you with all the supplies needed to complete the book's projects. We reviewed Vol. 3 Art of the Middle Ages which has 64 pages, 18 lessons, and 106 illustrations. The book covers art produced in the Middle Ages, from the early Migration Period to the Gothic architecture of France. The students will be introduced to the ideology of the period and methods for making art. The lesson includes twelve text lessons featuring artworks by medieval masters and six video lessons featuring art material instruction. Throughout the lessons in this book, the students will work with colored paper, needlework, weaving, and oil pastels. Our Thoughts on ARTistic Pursuits A few things that I was impressed with right away with using this product: it was hardbound, thin, and the DVD/Blu-Ray were attached inside the book! Previous copies of ARTistic Pursuits curriculum has been a thick book which can seem intimidating. This book was visually engaging and I was eager to dive in. The pages are also a glossy print with full color images. All the video lessons are clearly labelled and the DVD pulls up a menu with each of the video lessons labeled for easy navigation. Love having both of these right in the book Nothing fancy---right to the point and easy to navigate each of the video lessons is clearly marked The best way to get started with these books is to look over the list of supplies that you will need. For this book, a lot of it is household items (foil, paper towels, tape, yarn, ect), but there are some specialty items needed like Gesso, gold acrylic paint, Mod Podge, chipboard...etc. I recommend looking at the materials list included in the book before getting started. Fortunately, we have reviewed enough art programs that i have collected 90% of these items and can just jump right in to the curriculum. I dove right in the book--beginning with reading the introduction to the Medieval World and then watching Video #1 for Lesson 1 with my youngest (age 7). This video shows us how to cut, weave, and paste paper strips on a paper loom...a skill that is referenced throughout the book. The student is encouraged to learn this skill before moving on to the actual project for Lesson 1 (a woven paper crown). I loved how the video began with an "actor" doing something from the era as an introduction. an introduction to the medieval world Clear directions for the art projects We opted to go ahead and weave a mat like the video demonstrated to get an idea of how the weaving process works. My son enjoyed this very much actually. He picked up on the skill quickly. He told me "apparently, this wasn't meant for a 7 year old." LOL. Once this was done, we moved on to make the crown project. We have been working through about 1 lesson per week and are gearing up for our next video lesson which will teach us about Panel Painting and using watercolor crayons! Here are some photos of some of the projects we have worked on... Weaving two animals together Initial Page Paper Mosaic Tractor I am personally looking forward to the sections all about textiles! I think he'll enjoy doing the stitching portions of these! These books are smaller in size than the ones they are replacing (one that I have reviewed in the past actually), but they are just as excellent. I also find that the addition of the video lessons really adds to the program. You will still need the same supplies, but the book is smaller and hardcover, making it easier to store. This program is incredibly easy to follow and very very interesting! I still recommend it to anyone desiring to teach multiple elementary grades at one time with interesting art projects. Although we will be setting it aside the rest of the summer, we will probably be adding it in to our school year this fall. Want to Know More About ARTistic Pursuits? For the last several weeks, we have been reviewing Art of the Middle Ages from the ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray series from ARTistic Pursuits Inc.. There were several other books in this series that my review crew worked on and I hope you will check out their reviews as well. Facebook * Twitter *** We have really enjoyed this series. I like the extra aspect of having the video lessons. I also like the LENGTH of this book and think it is much more doable for families. Once again we reaffirm our love for ARTistic Pursuits!

Then we are told and shown how to do woven beasts out of construction paper. ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray Art of the Middle Ages Lesson 3 (Initial Page). The third lesson we learned about art in monasteries, medieval illumination, and initial pages. There are questions at the end in bold of the this art history lesson about the picture of a medieval illumination. Then we are told and shown how to do a initial page with the first letter of the artists name. We couldn't find the gold origami paper so we ended up using shiny wrapping paper for the letter. ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray Art of the Middle Ages Lesson 4 (Mosaic). In the forth lesson we learned about art in Basilicas and Byzantine mosaics. There are questions at the end in bold of the this art history lesson about the picture of the Theotokos Mosaic. Then we are told and shown how to do a mosaic of a person out of construction paper. ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray Art of the Middle Ages Lesson 5 (Panel Drawing). In the fifth lesson we watched video #2. We learned about Gothic panels in this lesson. We were instructed to make a panel drawing with tissue paper to create the background and a picture of a colorful song bird drawn on it. It is perfect for our homeschool art and to go along with our unit study history lessons about the Middle Ages. More

"Lana" Acrylic painting on black paper. Unframed Outstanding artwork produced by an artist whose sole source of income is the sales of his creations. I would want to express my gratitude to everyone who supports artistic pursuits, especially those that include truly handmade artwork. Dimensions 25 x 37 cm Framing This artwork is sold unframed Materials Acrylic paint I'm from the North East of Scotland and after spending various stages of my life in some other countries I seem to have settled here east of Berlin. I exhibit my work locally, mostly in my own little gallery in the town centre, and at art fairs and other events, but I'm enjoying selling more and more of my artwork on online galleries, exposing my art to the world. I am inspired by why the beautiful landscapes of places I visit, including the country of my birth. And also inspired by the female form, order female landscape as I like to call it. But I will never can find myself to any particular genre- it's not what you paint, it's how you paint it.
