Artist: John Singer Sargent | Year (completed): 1907 | Period: Impressionism Chess was a game that Sargent enjoyed playing a lot and took with him when he went on painting trips. In the summer of 1907, Sargent visited Purtud, a small town in the Val d'Aosta on the Swiss-Italian border, and painted his nieces and friends there. Like how he frequently chose the attire for the women in his formal commissioned portraits, he often packed up exotic shawls and clothing to have his friends and family wear when he painted them. The Chess Game was one such occasion. Sargent's personal valet Nicola d'Inverno is depicted in the painting with what seems like one of his nieces.

Hannah Flowers is a self-taught artist, born 1989 in Tasmania, Australia, and currently residing in Scotland, United Kingdom. She lives in a small cottage by the forest and sea where she can draw inspiration from the nature surrounding her. Working in oils using the indirect methods of the renaissance she is fascinated by depicting beauty, both real and imagined. Often using grotesque or humorous undertones and hidden details to add dimension to the narratives she weaves. Hannah is a firm believer in art for arts sake- not feeling the need to imbue her work with any moral or current event commentary, but rather creating a unique atmosphere for the viewer to enjoy. She draws inspiration from many different time periods and styles, leaving her paintings with a sense of being just outside of time and place.
This exhibition of 31 paintings is the artist’s first major retrospective; it includes many new, never before seen works. His subjects hover between traditional figurative painting and portraiture, with subjects often seemingly caught in an interrupted moment, as if the sitter has just realized the artist’s presence.

Artist: Rhoda Holmes Nicholls | Year (completed): 1900 | Period: Impressionism Despite being little known today, Rhoda Holmes Nicholls was a prominent and successful artist in her day. The influence of Winslow Homer and James McNeill Whistler can be seen in her use of transparent washes and swift, impressionistic brushstrokes. Women and flowers were frequently depicted together in late nineteenth-century American art as a reminder of the transient nature of physical beauty. But in this interpretation, vivid color and brisk brushwork capture the scene's inherent liveliness. Instead of cultivating flowers in a garden, a strong female figure bends to harvest flowers that grow wild in the countryside. The figure's hat, which reflects the sunlight and draws attention, seems to shield her from the viewer's gaze.
Girl with a Pearl Earring Item # 1937622 Johannes Vermeer While Johannes Vermeer is best known for The Girl With The Pearl Earring, this Dutch master produced several beloved pieces during his short life. Johannes Vermeer wall art allows you to bring a sense of harmony to the walls of any space. Characteristics of Johannes Vermeer wall art Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter. Born in Delft, in southern Holland, although he was relatively unknown in his time. Art historians suggest he painted around 45 pieces in total, of which only 36 survive today. Vermeer worked within the walled city of Delft and sold paintings to local patrons and nobility. However, it was not until the 19th century that he achieved wider recognition. His paintings typically focused on domestic interiors, with subjects including scenes of everyday life, such as reading, playing instruments, or performing housekeeping tasks. However, there is little ordinary or everyday about his technique. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Vermeer's work is his use of light. He often used a single source of light balanced against dark shadows to achieve an incredible sense of realism within his work. When added to the meticulous details and perspective in his painting, his works have an intimate and almost photographic quality. While Vermeer often used a limited color palette, he chose rich hues with a deep sense of compatibility. The result was compositions with an incredible balance that added to his masterful use of light, which partly explains his present-day popularity. How to choose Johannes Vermeer art for your space Classical art, such as the work of 17th-century painters like Johannes Vermeer, can work well with a wide range of decor styles. These pieces are a must-have for fans of Vermeer's exquisite technique and fine details and anyone who wants to bring a sense of order to their walls. While homes with classic or traditional decor styles are complementary spaces for classical works, you don't need to oversubscribe to conventions. Indeed, with the right frame or considerate adherence to color, Johannes Vermeer wall art can sit well within modern and contemporary design styles. Vermeer's use of luminous color and contrasting shade give his work a special harmony. Delicate, detailed, and painstakingly composed, a Vermeer canvas has maturity, realism, and order that is hard to find. Representing these qualities on your walls can help evoke an atmosphere that goes beyond masterful painting techniques. Explore our fascinating collection of Johannes Vermeer wall art to bring sophistication to your space. With a range of works depicting lovingly rendered 17th-century Dutch life, these timeless pieces make elegant additions to any wall.
