Akiya Kageichi is a Japanese illustrator who calls himself Golden Gravel, a name which may refer to Japanese rock gardens. His sinister jesters, lazy rulers and clandestine warriors are set within scenes full of chaotic imagery. Astrological symbols, particularly moons, are heavily prominent, suggesting the mysterious forces of dark nights are at work. In a single plane, objects morph, creating dynamic and active scenes. Kageichi reveals hidden underworlds and secret futures, in which sorcery and witchcraft pull the strings and determine what happens in the real world.

Based in Seoul, Korea, Kyuin Shim is a digital artist and sculptor who executes dark and poignant visions by altering the human body. His latest sculptural series "Black Black" features several monochromatic renditions of mannequin-like figures whose bodies seem to disintegrate before one's eyes. In Korean, the title of the series has two meanings: "Black" and "Sound of Crying." The characters' flesh becomes consumed by bubbling matter that eventually turns into a downpour of water from their limbs and orifices. A recent series of digital 3D renderings, "Small Place," similarly abstracts the human body, this time in all white. Featuring different groupings of feet sticking out from under a cubicle-like prism, the piece evokes the smothering closeness of an unhealthy relationship. Take a look at some of Shim's work below.

Ron Hicks’ works have been characterised as a blend of representational art and impressionism. His creative process involves explaining an idea for a pose to a model and then waiting for her to strike a comfortable facsimile. “The best postures are the ones that just happen; then the models stay comfortable,” he says. “I don’t want to paint a pose that is unnatural and has nothing to do with actual life.” Hicks paints full time with every show he creates selling out. His goal is to travel around the world and spend enough time gaining a deeper understanding of the people of the counties he visits. “If you are not moving, evolving and solving problems as a painter, you are dead. I don’t want to be one of those artists that says, ‘This is a nice flower painting. Now let me do it again and again.’” Hicks says. “My goal is to keep my work as fresh and new as possible.” See: www.ronhicks.com/ [Art Renewal Centre - Oil on canvas, 40 x 30 inches]

Artist Paolo Del Toro uses needle felting to create massive masks and sculptures out of wool and foam. His creations depict mythical faces in expressions that range from grotesque grimaces to contemplative introspection; all of his works feature open mouths. While Del Toro’s work is not tied to any particular cultural visual heritage, the shifting personalities of his characters are reminiscent of Japanese Noh theater masks, which are designed to show different emotions from different angles.
