Atractylis gummifera Greece
Atractylis cancellata L. is a short-lived wildflower with a single, deep root. Its hairy stem branches out occasionally. The plant is adorned with long, gray leaves that are rough on both sides and have spiny edges. Lower leaves have stalks, while upper ones hug the stem and are deeply divided. Bright purple flowers, all alike, bloom in small heads surrounded by spiny purple bracts. The fruit, a tiny cone, is covered in long, silky hairs and topped with a fluffy white plume for wind dispersal.
