Now in paperback, the fictionalized account of infamous author Patricia Highsmith caught up in the longing and obsession that would inspire her groundbreaking work of queer fiction, The Price of Salt Flung Out of Space is both a love letter to the essential lesbian novel The Price of Salt and an examination of its notorious author, Patricia Highsmith. Veteran comics creators Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer have teamed up to tell this story through Highsmith's eyes--reimagining the events that inspired her to write the story that would become a foundational piece of queer literature. Flung Out of Space opens with Pat begrudgingly writing low-brow comics. A drinker, a smoker, and a hater of life, Pat knows she can do better. Her brain churns with images of the great novel she could and should be writing, what will eventually be Strangers on a Train, which would later be adapted into a classic film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951. At the same time, Pat, a lesbian consumed with self-loathing, is in and out of conversion therapy, leaving a trail of sexual conquests and broken hearts in her wake. However, one of those very affairs--and a chance encounter in a department store--give Pat the idea for her soon-to-be beloved tale of homosexual love that was the first of its kind: It gave the lesbian protagonists a happy ending. This is not just the story behind a classic queer book but also of a queer artist who was deeply flawed. It's a comic about what it was like to write comics in the 1950s, but also about what it means to be a writer at any time in history, struggling to find your voice. Author Grace Ellis contextualizes Patricia Highsmith as both an unintentional queer icon and a figure whose problematic views and noted anti-Semitism have cemented her controversial legacy. Highsmith's life imitated her art with results as devastating as the plot twists that brought her fame and fortune. The updated paperback edition of Flung Out of Space includes sixteen pages of bonus content with in-depth visual development materials and a teaching guide. | Author: Grace Ellis | Publisher: Harry N. Time Ripples is a gift of love for those who find their way to its pages. Through poetry, prose, and essay it addresses many of the issues and circumstances we all encounter during our daily journeys. Many of life's gifts and challenges are dealt with on the pages of this book, which is offered as a companion or friend to accompany us as we weave our way together through this reality. Though it does not always seem so, this is a journey to be enjoyed. Remember that it is only for a brief moment that we find ourselves here before our Soul directs us to another adventure, a new experience of ever-increasing purity and reflection of God's great plan. The deep mystery, which we all know at a certain level, but have forgotten, is that we are an intimate part of this plan, co-creators of our own reality. And as co-creators, we are wholly capable of healing its inconsistencies and other miscreation resulting from confused thoughts and foggy sight. Time Ripples is comprised of thoughts and inspirations which occurred to the author during meditation and prayer over many years. We all have access to these ideas. We have only to quiet the noisy confusion of our minds through patient meditation and ultimately, contemplation. The poems and essays contained herein are presented as meditative seed thoughts which can be used by the reader, along with their own inspirations, to find a place of peace within so that each day can be a reminder of our intimate and critical place in God's created cosmos. As Kahlil Gibran points out in his classic The Prophet, we are, "boundless drops in a boundless ocean." We are all critical to the ever-expanding tapestry of creation. The loss of even one Soul leaves a gaping hole in this tapestry and we all play a part in its healing. This ability is enhanced through meditation and prayer. You are invited to travel a while with us through these pages, and in so doing, add your own precious Ripples in Time. | Author: Robert Wellington | Publisher: Wa Publishing | Publication Date: 1-Sep-21 | Number of Pages: 176 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1636269877 | ISBN-13: 9781636269870

This book is a call to everyone to flow as the Creators that WE ARE to band together in LOVE in creating a new earth. We have ENORMOUS potential to CREATE for the GREATER GOOD. Yet, we have NO IDEA what we as a COLLECTIVE are capable of because our humanity has for the most part kept us UNCONSCIOUS and SEPARATE. We become conscious and wake up by BEING PRESENT and HARMONIZING with ourselves through LOVE and ACCEPTANCE. The more CONSCIOUS PRESENCE we create, we send out healing harmonious energy around the world. This is how we create a new earth. | Author: Denise Roussel | Publisher: Independently published | Publication Date: Sep 30, 2018 | Number of Pages: 315 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 1719961085 | ISBN-13: 9781719961080
Written more than a century ago and initially regarded even by their creators as nothing more than light entertainment, the fourteen operas of Gilbert & Sullivan emerged over the course of the twentieth century as the world's most popular body of musical-theater works, ranking second only to Shakespeare in the history of English-language theater. Despite this resounding popularity and proven longevity, most books written about the duo have focused on the authors rather than the works. With this detailed examination of all fourteen operas, Gayden Wren fills the void. His bold thesis finds the key to the operas' longevity, not in the clever lyrics, witty dialogue, or catchy music, but in the central themes underlying the characters and stories themselves. Like Shakespeare's comedies, Wren shows, the operas of Gilbert & Sullivan endure because of their timeless themes, which speak to audiences as powerfully now as they did the first time they were performed. Written out of an abiding love for the Savoy operas, this volume is essential reading for any devotee of these enchanting works, or indeed for anyone who loves musical theater.

We are lucky to have him.\" To Jeff Mahoney of the Hamilton Spectator, \"James Strecker is an artist of the arts, and he takes for his subject the luminescence left on our senses by the work of dancers and musicians, painters and poets. Rosemary Wells, one of America's foremost creators of children's books, will have the very youngest child turning pages and remembering the words. What better way instill a lifetime love of reading and learning? About the Author As far back as I can remember, I did nothing but draw. I discovered very early that making a picture of anything meant people saying, "Look at that!" How else could I get that kind of attention? After high school, I went to the Museum School in Boston. At nineteen, I left school, married Tom Wells, and began a career as a book designer. Two years later, when my husband applied to the Columbia School of Architecture, we moved to New York City. I found a job as a designer at Macmillan, where I published my first book, Sing a Song, O! My home life has inspired many of my books. Our West Highland white terrier, Angus, had the shape and expressions to become Benjamin, Tulip, Timothy, and all the other animals I have made up for my stories. He also appears as himself in a couple of books. My two daughters have been constant inspirations, especially for my Max books. Simple incidents from childhood are universal. The dynamics between older and younger siblings are common to all families. I am also an accomplished eavesdropper in restaurants, trains, and gatherings of any kind. Writing for children is as difficult as writing serious verse. Writing for children is as mysterious as writing fine music. It is as personal as singing. Once the story is there, the drawings just appear. I feel the emotion I want to show; then I let it run down my arm from my face, and it goes out the pencil. My drawings look as if they are done quickly. They are not. First they are sketched in light pencil, then nearly rubbed out, then drawn again in heavier pencil. What appears to be a thick ink line is really a series of layers of tiny ink lines. When I finish these lines, the drawing is ready for color. I have been writing and illustrating for almost 30 years. It has been a pure delight. There are hard parts, but no bad or boring parts - that is more than can be said for any other line of work that I know. Learn more at www.rosemarywells.com.
