"Be Still My Soul" is a 5x7in block print reproduction printed on a deckled edge cream paper (250gsm). The print is signed on the back and comes unframed. I originally created this block print by carving out the image by hand. I rolled a velvet black ink on its surface and pressed the cotton paper against the block to imprint the image. I titled this print, "Be Still My Soul" after an old hymn that so often puts me at ease. In a world that is full of brokenness, it easy to feel disheartened. “Be Still My Soul” FOURTH WATCH GOD A New Testament night was divided into four watches - the fourth watch being from 3am until 6, about sunrise. After the Savior fed the 5000, He had his disciples get into a boat; they obeyed. Jesus then went to seek solace in prayer. Throughout the night a storm swept down on the disciples –rowing frantically and hardly moving, they needed help. “Did heaven look on, and would not take their part?” –Shakespeare In Mark’s version he adds one important detail – Jesus “saw them toiling in rowing”. They did not know how aware he was of them. And then “about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea,… [and] they…saw him… and immediately he saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I… And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased”. Take Joseph Smith’s experience – “At the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction -…just at the moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light”. Hagar in Genesis sunk into despair when saying, “the water was spent.” In the wilderness with her son, Ishmael, with no food or water she thought their lives were over. She lifted up her voice and wept. God, SEEING her, opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the bottle and gave them water to drink and live. I wanted to throw my iPad against the wall a million times as I struggled to figure out how to use it (I still do). I chose to leave Christ faceless mostly because I thought it would be too hard to give him a face that reflected him accurately. It thought I would ruin it if I tried, so I left him. Now he hangs on my wall and I spend much of my time staring at his facelessness, reflecting on what it may actually look like, and I'm happy that I left him this way. Often when I see paintings of Christ, I examine his face and think, "close, but not quite." I imagine that his face holds so much love, so much mercy and empathy that it can't be accurately captured in our human depictions. I imagine that the radiant beams that stream from his face will warm our souls with a fire so deep and comforting that we will never want to break our gaze. I imagine that when his face sees ours it will light up in celebration of our long awaited reunion. I also like to imagine that when I see his face my soul will be met with immediate recognition and I will be able to say "This, this is my savior." . This is another one of my acrylic pour paintings. I LOVE creating these paintings. I don't know what it will be when I start but as the paint is pouring over the canvas I begin seeing an image. As the paint is still wet I begin cautiously assisting the paint. I then let it dry and then go back and further define the painting. This painting is of a woman who is allowing the river from heaven flow through her and out of her. It's the river of God. The painting measures 14"x 18" and is painted on stretched canvas with acrylic paint. It comes framed in a bronze colored wood frame. It is ready to hang with a wire in the back. The painting will be shipped first class with insurance and tracking.
