Visit media.radiosai.org/journals/archives/Chinna_Katha_Archive... for nice, meaningful, thought provocative stories. Stories we tell contain beliefs that guide our actions in the world. These stories teach us how to orient ourselves and what to perceive. They teach us what to expect and what to perceive. They teach us our values. They teach us what to expect from the world. The set of expectations that guides our behavior is often called ‘beliefs’; to speak of a belief is to use shorthand for a more complex idea. A belief is simultaneously biological (as in neural connections), hormonal (as in guiding emotional reactions), perceptual (as in the many words Eskimos have for describing different types of snow), psychological (as in teaching us how to behave toward others), and sociological (as reflected in the laws of society). The stories of people inform us about hidden perceptions and assumptions the person makes about the world. It tells us what he or she expects. This is crucial, for what we expect is often what happens.

For students to probe, discuss and explain their ideas about life using upper-intermediate and advanced language skills. Example questions: “If you new there would be a nuclear war in one week, what would you do?” “Given the ability to project yourself into the past but not return, would you do so? Where would you go and what would you try to accomplish if you knew you might change the course of history?” This activity is requested by my students once a semester! I hope you will enjoy it as much as they do! *** USE PAGE 3 AS BACK *** - ESL worksheets
