The home was converted to a hotel in 1958 and was run by the family since then. From what I can see, it appears that the Bellevue Hotel was hit hard by a hurricane or some other disaster and is in need of a complete re-build. Most of the buildings on the waterfront are rather well worn and in need of repair. It's sad that such a beautiful natural setting is home to such a poor economic situation. BELIZE Belize City is made up of many wooden buildings and exudes some colonial charm, but the downtown area also has many seedy neighborhoods, and tourists should beware of walking around the city after dark. Belize was known as British Honduras until 1981 when they gained their independence from Britain. Bordering Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean, Belize is the second smallest country in Central America (after El Salvador) Diving is Belize's main claim to fame due to its 150 miles of coast along the longest reef system in the western hemisphere (and the second longest in the world).
