Among all the cantilever chairs of the Bauhaus epoch, the armchair S 35, with its lightness, flexibility and comfort, casts a shadow over everything heavy and inert. In 1930, the modern lifestyle communicated by the S 35 appeared visionary; today, it is part of our mobile and individual lifestyle. With S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in combining all of the functions of a cantilever tubular steel armchair in a single line that also includes the armrests. Breuer achieved a double cantilever effect with his design: seat and armrests flex independently from each other. The flexing movement of the seat and backrest frame cantilevered towards the back is balanced by the flexing armrests. A matching footstool is available for extra comfort – also designed as a cantilever piece of furniture. The comfortable club chair S 35 was first presented in 1930 in the famous Deutscher Werkbund exhibition at the “Salon des Artistes Décorateurs” in Paris as part of the furnishing of a prototypical high-rise apartment which Breuer realised together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
1 Fauteuil À Dossier Basculant UAM chair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand for Cassina. Following the launch of the 1 Fauteuil À Dossier Basculant UAM chair in 1928, the design was reconfigured for presentation at the 1930 exhibition of the Union of Modern Artists. Resulting in the birth of the chair. The chair demonstrated how furniture pieces presented the previous year at the Salon d’Automne could be made using a wider variety of upholsteries. In this case, the added detail was a refined leather rim made according to the finest saddlery technique, which inspired high fashion collections already in the 1930s. Another subtle change was to the armrests. These became slightly wider at the front and tapered towards the back. The 1 Fauteuil À Dossier Basculant UAM chair is lightweight and perfectly balanced. The taut backrest and seat offer optimal comfort. Also known as the Basculant Chair, the chair’s sculptural shape and comfortable armrests mean it is undoubtedly ahead of its time. The chair was previously called LC1 UAM chair.
Taking cues from the classic Banker’s Light, British designer John Tree merged archetypal references with his contemporary, colourful sensibility to create the Apex Lamp collection. The folded steel shades create a peaked roofline silhouette, providing the inspiration behind the series’ name as well as offering a graphic contrast to the chrome-plated bases. The colourful steel shade rotates 360 degrees, allowing users to direct light to suit their needs.
