Suitable for indoors or outdoors. As each bench is bespoke and made to order there may be very slight details in the natural wood, this adds to the character and beauty of each item. Our benches come with protective cork pads on the underside to prevent any surface marks. About In designing this bench I took cues from sashimono, seeking a outwardly simple aesthetic which gives way to more elaborate detail upon a closer look. In building this bench I utilized joinery unique to Japanese timber carpentry. Narrow and backless, the simple lines express the natural texture of the end grain of each species. Walnut is more common in North Alabama, but walnut trees inhabit the urban forest in the City of Birmingham, AL and it's surrounding areas. The 12" x 12" beam is milled and finished to sit raised by a mild steel base with a black patina. The walnut beam bench can be fabricated to order, in a variety of lengths. Our Arch Bench is designed to symbolize the landscape of southern Utah. Carved out of a solid hunk of Douglas Fir, these benches are hefty! The blanks are shaped by hand using a chainsaw and other power tools, then cleaned up with chisels and sanders. The cracks known as "checking", are a natural condition of the wood as it's moisture content changes. Checks are not likely to compromise the piece but will expand over time. There is no finish applied to these benches which allows them to age with use or if left outside, to gray. This also gives you the opportunity to apply a finish or stain of your choice. Please note that these pieces are made by hand and, while we can sculpt to the sizing indicated, no two will be alike and the arch may be slightly different within, due to the character of each piece of wood.
