About Some works of art are exploratory; they ask questions, but offer no answers. Some are the distillation of a lifetime of experience, and the answers they give cannot easily be translated into words. Richard MacDonald’s latest mythological sculpture, “Orpheus Ascending”, is a triumphant work of beauty, depth, and passion. It answers questions that are as old as humanity itself. The Greeks understood that all human drama pivots on the pervasive and unavoidable experience of loss. It is our vulnerability to loss that heightens the experience of mortality. Our time is limited, our control is limited, and out of this is born the great excitement of human existence. We love with intensity, because we know that our hold is tenuous. Greek mythology revolves around this essential paradox of human life. The love story of Orpheus and Eurydices exemplifies this principle in all it heartbreaking beauty. Richard MacDonald is drawn again to the beautiful story of Orpheus and Eurydices. When Orpheus’ bride is struck down on their wedding day by a deadly adder, he pleads with the gods to allow him to rescue her. If he fails, he promises they can keep him in Hades too. The gods allow him to try, but with one condition—he must not look back. Of course, in his anxiety for his love, he does glance back to make sure she is following him into the sunlight. At that instant the gods are true to their cruel promise, and Eurydices is pulled back down into the darkness so quickly that her farewell to Orpheus is barely audible. Orpheus is not allowed to cross back into Hades, although he waits in grief on the banks of the river Styx forever pining for his true love.

Stunning examples of Russia's 18th-century wooden architecture.
This is a wooden spatula spoon. It's combination of a spatula and a spoon. It is 12 1/2 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. The front edge is slightly angled to the right (on right-handed versions, left on left-handed) and flattened. The bowl is medium-deep and has a curve, which I find makes the spoon more functional. Great for getting down to the bottom of the pot or to stir with, saute with, mix with, scrape a bowl with and serving. I like to make my designs as multi-functional as possible. One spoon to rule them all, so to speak. I'll be making a larger size soon because I love this design. The one pictured is an example in Walnut wood. This listing has options for Walnut, Cherry, Maple, and Curly Maple. I make both a left-handed and a right-handed version so check to see that the wood species you want and the handedness you want are in stock. If it is sold out, contact us and we'll make some more within a couple of days. I'll be adding photos of the other species available soon. The one you receive will vary a little in grain and color from the photos. Finished with beeswax and mineral oil. These spoons are finished and ready to ship. The photos are examples and the one you receive will vary a little in grain and color. Care is easy, just wash in hot soapy water and towel dry. Don't put in the dishwasher. Try to wash it quickly or at least rinse it off so that sauce or food doesn't dry on necessitating letting it soak for a long time to get it off. Treat with our spoon oil mixture every couple of weeks or some alternative. If you want to make your own mix 3 parts by volume of mineral oil and 1 part beeswax in a double boiler. The ratio is not critical, just so it's soft enough to wipe on easily. Rub it in and then wipe off any excess. It will go a long way to keeping your spoon in great shape. I've been using some of mine for 16 years now and they only get more beautiful as the years go by as they develop a patina. Happy cooking everyone. This utensil is "pre-washed" so to speak. The grain has been raised with water during the finishing process to remove any loose fiber ends so the spoon will remain smooth after you use it. You can help this a lot by applying beeswax and mineral oil using a pad of 0000 steel wool every couple of weeks. The steel wool will remove any new loose fibers and keep the spoon as smoother as it is out of the box. Care is easy, just wash in hot soapy water, towel dry, and apply some mineral oil or walnut oil every couple of weeks or you can buy some of our spoon oil finish which is Beeswax and mineral oil. A 4 oz. jar lasts for a long time and it will help to keep your spoon looking and feeling good for many years. You can make your own by melting 1 part beeswax into 3 parts mineral oil in a double boiler. It should be the consistency of Chap Stick when it cools. Legacy.
