Fiddler Beetles - Eupoecila australasiae - Classification Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae These beetles are common over eastern Australia from the tropics right to Melbourne, found in heath and woodlands. Adult beetles emerge from soil in early summer and feed on the nectar of flowers. The beetles lay eggs in rotting logs or in the damp soil under logs. The grubs feed on rotting timber and build cocoons of soil and debris in which they pupate. In spring and early summer when angophora, tea-trees and many other native plants are flowering en masse, hundreds of species of beetles and other insects feed on the blossoms. These attractive beetles are harmless to humans. Fiddler beetles are marked with beautiful patterns and look as if they have been expertly handpainted with the lyre-shaped markings. They are quick flying and strong and can be associated with a whirring sound.
