Download Image of The Annunciation and Visitation from BL Lansdowne 420, f. 7. Free for commercial use, no attribution required. Full-page illuminated miniature in two registers of the Annunciation above, and the Visitation below, with figures of Gabriel, Mary, and Elisabeth holding scrolls. Image taken from f. 7 of Psalter, with calendar. Written in Latin. The Annunciation is a biblical event in which the angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce that she had been chosen to give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. The event is recorded in the New Testament in the Gospels of Luke and is a central moment in the story of the Nativity of Jesus. The scene typically depicts Mary and Gabriel, who is usually shown holding a lily, a symbol of purity, and announcing the news of the birth of Jesus to Mary. The Visitation is a scene in the New Testament that depicts the meeting between Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary visited Elizabeth after the angel Gabriel had informed her that she was to become the mother of Jesus. When Mary arrived, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she declared that Mary was blessed among women and that the child within her was the son of God. The Visitation is often depicted in Christian art, particularly in paintings and sculptures, as a tender and intimate moment between two expectant mothers. Mary is typically shown with a child-like expression of joy and wonder, while Elizabeth is often depicted as being filled with the Holy Spirit, with gestures or symbols that reflect her state of grace. The Visitation is significant for several reasons. It highlights the close relationship between Mary and Elizabeth, and their shared experience as mothers-to-be. It also emphasizes the divine nature of the child within Mary, and the role that John the Baptist would play in preparing the way for Jesus' ministry. The scene is often interpreted as a symbol of the coming together of the old and new covenants, as Elizabeth, who was a descendent of Aaron, represents the old covenant, while Mary, who is carrying the son of God, represents the new covenant. The image of Mary holding the Christ Child is a common depiction in Christian art and is known as the "Madonna and Child." It represents the mother of Jesus and her son and is a symbol of motherhood, love, and compassion.. Dated: 1300 - 1500. Thomas Howard, the 2nd Earl of Arundel, who was a prominent figure during the early 17th century in England. Thomas Howard enjoyed a close relationship with King Charles I, and this connection allowed him to expand his collection. The king was granting him privileges to purchase manuscripts and books, and the collection grew in size and importance. The English Civil War and the execution of King Charles I had a significant impact on Thomas Howard's life.
