He is a man that has paid it forward many times, and in all the years I’ve known him, I have heard nothing but the most positive things come out of his mouth. Our meeting and this painting take place in Gallery Onyx, a gallery that represents both of us but is also a frequent place for artists to gather and talk.I painted a of Basquiat’s painting to remember him as an artist. As I feel he is a vital part of our art history. Also, to speak to the old unjust ways of the powerful and how it destroyed them. We must gain knowledge of them and ourselves to keep us enlightened and not dunce. We continue to derive our strength from our ancestor’s knowledge, who is always present and watching over us. For most of us, our history continues to be elusive. But today, thanks to contemporaries like Julius, we can build new chapters forward. Dallas-based artist Alexis Franklin considers her digital renderings a reinvention of the expected. “I’ve always seen the world through a filter that brings vibrance and excitement to things most people wouldn’t notice, and that’s something that I really want to have come across in my work,” she says of her expressive paintings. Through facial expressions, gestures, and color, each work highlights the nuances of the subjects’ experience, personality, and mood. A church videographer by day, painting is Franklin’s side-project and one for which she’s received an influx of attention in recent days. More
Few would argue if we said that pets are an endless source of joy and happiness in our lives. Therefore, there is no surprise people are trying to immortalize them in every way possible. This Aussie painter, Vanessa Stockard, found the best way to do that by sneaking her three adorable cats, Kevin The Kittin, his mom Fluff Ferstenberg and the head of the adorable fluff family, Satan, into her paintings. Stockard’s process includes pieces developed without visual reference but rather from memory. These narratives incorporate domestic pets such as cats and dogs, juxtaposing the anthropomorphic nature of these animals are given by society, she infuses the personification of virtue and vice into the everyday canine and feline status quo. Cats with their fluffy comical exteriors yet instinctual urge to kill and a tendency to be cruel to their prey, dogs with their providence of happiness and friendship flung back to Churchill’s metaphor for depression. Despite this not-so -cheerful description of her works, Stockard manages to make her art somehow quirky and very enjoyable!

Utah-based illustrator Jenna Barton (previously) creates shadowy portraits of animals inspired by her dreams, travels, experiences, and the aesthetic and emotions of the rural environments where she grew up. While she does integrate watercolor into some of her illustrations, Barton’s work is primarily digital. The style she refers to as “magical-realism-animal-gothic” came about around 2017, after she completed her BFA in Illustration and decided to take some time to escape the constraints of school and to focus on art that she cared about.
