Black-and-white photos are especially fascinating. For some reason, they often seem deeper and more striking than the colour ones. Perhaps it’s because they don’t try to distract us with bright colours, but rather cut straight to the chase.

Fine art Black and White print in choice of size and finish. ARTIST'S STATEMENT I have studied traditional black and white photography with a number of academic professors over the years since the 1970s.All of my images are captured on black and white film.I have also studied in the same academic settings, the history of photography and therefore historical processes since the mid 19th century. One person I feel important in this context is Sir John Herschel who in 1839 coined the word "photography" from the Greek "photo",light, and "graph" to write, in other words to "write with light.Herschel also invented the Cyanotype process a very early photography process and one of the first historical processes I learned.Since learning that process I have added many other historical processes that require UV light to print and therefore must be printed in the sun or some other source of UV light. Also in the historical context the cameras that I use are also at least 50 to120 years old, they range from 35mm up to 8x10 format cameras, again all using black and white film.I develop all film myself, and the combinations of the hundreds of different films and developers are endless and contribute to the artistic process of creating a physical fine art photograph.Once the film is developed the negatives are used to produce one of the historical process prints on a variety of art paper many times watercolor paper, creating a one of a kind print that is impossible of replication.Much of the developed film is scanned and digital prints can be made from these in unlimited editions .The works I will be offering here are therefore initially captured with vintage equipment and then processed in the natural world using the "magic" of physics and organic chemistry. What I hope to offer here are images in hard copy and printed as described above, and curated based on selection previously either by publication in art magazines, or selected for juried gallery shows, or some way selected as meaningfully by others. I offer for your consideration my work as a photographic artist.

Lillian Bassman (June 15, 1917 – February 13, 2012) was an American photographer and painter. She grew up in Brooklyn and Greenwich Village, New York, and studied at the Textile High School in Manhattan and graduated in 1933. From the 1940s until the 1960s Bassman worked as a fashion photographer for Junior Bazaar and later at Harper's Bazaar where she promoted the careers of photographers such as Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Louis Faurer and Arnold Newman. Under the guidance of the Russian emigrant, Alexey Brodovitch, she began to photograph her model subjects primarily in black and white. Her work was published for the most part in Harper’s Bazaar from 1950 to 1965. By the 1970s Bassman’s interest in pure form in her fashion photography was out of vogue. She turned to her own photo projects and abandoned fashion photography. In doing so she tossed out 40 years of negatives and prints - her life’s work. A forgotten bag filled with hundreds of images was discovered over 20 years later. Bassman’s fashion photographic work began to be re-appreciated in the 1990s. She worked with digital technology and abstract color photography into her 90s to create a new series of work. She used Photoshop for her image manipulation. The most notable qualities about her photographic work are the high contrasts between light and dark, the graininess of the finished photos, and the geometric placement and camera angles of the subjects. Bassman became one of the last great woman photographers in the world of fashion. An amazing collection of 50 black and white photos below will prove why she was.
Today, in the era of digital technology black and white often awake nostalgic feelings of the 20th century, the good old times when the television was just invented, when people read colorless printed newspapers and when people were just imagining cell phones equipped with photo cameras. But still, dozens of years later, many artists use black and white photography for artistic purposes. It is one of the best and cheapest types of photography for the beginners to test their creativity. This showcase is a tribute to this often forgotten and underrated art of photography.

He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints. For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery. Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the 'Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation’. The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as he printed them onto ‘vellum’, and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art). Ian created rare and customized pieces and each piece was totally original and a “one-off”. Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work. Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work and she’s still creating prints. categories : Black and white photography, 20th. century, Archival pigment print, 90's, France, Rain, Street, City, Cityscape , Photographic film, Analogue, Analog, Oversize, Grainy
