If you want to earn a living in the custom business, scale is everything. Reinventing the wheel with every build will be expensive, unless you have a rock solid client base or a wealthy collector on speed dial. Most savvy builders replicate the parts they use for one-off customs, but Johnny Nguyen of Upcycle Motor Garage has taken the concept a step further: he’s built two BMW R100s at the same time, creating a pair of sister bikes that are equally gorgeous in slightly different ways. Johnny runs his one-man shop out of a small garage in Anaheim, California. “I've

Most bike builders try to make their machines as squeaky clean as possible. If a build looks ‘factory fresh,’ it’s a job well done. But Alex Ahrer and Herwig Prammer beg to differ. They buried the tank of this replica boardtracker on a sheep farm for three months, to get a thoroughly rusted effect. And then they painted the entire engine in retina-searing Sulfur Yellow—the color beloved of artists from Van Gogh to Mondrian. (And known to paint shops as RAL 1016.) These are not the actions of logical people, so we had to investigate further. It turns out that

There's a trend that's picked up speed amazingly fast this year: wood on motorcycles. It's tricky to pull off, but when it's executed tastefully the results can be spectacular. After all, some of the world's most desirable cars and yachts feature exquisite wooden highlights. And that’s where Arjan van den Boom of Ironwood Motorcycles found inspiration for his latest build—cars such as Aston Martins, and classic Riva boats. Dubbed 'The Savage,' this 1978 BMW R75 is a blend of both materials and styles. “After fifty-plus Ironwood projects, this is my first actual iron-and-wood bike,” the Amsterdam-based builder observes. “It's a
"The bike virus only sleeps but never dies."Such were the words of Thomas Hoellweger, an Austrian native who began customizing two-wheelers when he put cardboard fairings on his kid's bicycle. More than a decade ago, when his son was two years old, Thomas sold his beloved Africa Twin -- but he p

While most custom bikes are a one-off project, Upcycle Motor Garage’s Johnny Nguyen rewrote the script with this pair of BMW R100 café racers.
These days, any mention of a 'scrambler' usually sparks a fervent debate about what exactly the name means. But here's something we can all agree on: vintage-style scramblers are seriously cool. We're talking about those machines that actually went off-piste; duking it out at the legendary International Six Days Trial, or blazing a trail across the Californian desert. Back then they were all about function—but today they're just as much about nostalgic appeal. Stephen Bentley of Dust Custom Motorcycles has captured the scrambler vibe perfectly with this latest build. And even though he's used a BMW—rather than a British or
