It’s tough to get a restomod right. An authentic nuts-and-bolts restoration is more work, but at least you have a blueprint to follow. Knowing how much 'mod' to add to the mix—without treading on the spirit of the original—is an art. Some BMW historians might baulk at the sight of a vintage boxer with even a single mod. But we're giving Ramon Seiler of Kontrast Kreations ten out of ten for this delightful petrol-blue bobber. Especially since it started out as a pick-n-mix basket case. Motorcycle fashions come and go, but the bobber has been around since the 1930s. In those days, it was known to speed-hungry Harley and Indian riders as a ‘cut down’ or ‘bob job.’ Fast forward 80 years, and the appeal of the bobber is still strong: Triumph is having difficulty meeting demand for its modern-day namesake. BMW, though, is not a brand you’d associate with the stripped-down hardtail look. But this remarkable machine from Austria can hold its own against the finest from the USA and England. It even stacks up well against BMW’s own official ‘R5 Hommage,’ which we

Eighty years ago, BMW revealed the groundbreaking R5—a machine that influenced motorcycle design right up to the 1950s, and still casts a spell over custom builders. Today, at the Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, BMW has just revealed the modern-day Hommage—designed in–house, and built with the help of Swedish master craftsmen Ronna and Benna Norén of Unique Custom Cycles. The Hommage is an intriguing (and drop-dead gorgeous) blend of historic design cues and modern custom building techniques. “In today’s world, it is very simple to keep it complicated, but very complicated to keep it simple,”

Does anyone remember the BMW R1150R Rockster? It was an attempt by BMW to inject some edginess into their capable but somewhat vanilla R1150R. So they gave it squinting headlights, a wider rear wheel, a hazard tape livery... and an unfortunate name. It was good enough to turn heads and agile enough to be a fun ride, but it also dated really quickly. So when the owner of this particular 2003-model Rockster decided it was time for an upgrade, he he had no qualms about ditching the quirky styling, and using it as the base for a custom project. The

With a barrage of classic BMW boxer customs gracing our screens of late, it's easy to overlook the legendary R80 G/S. Being such an iconic motorcycle, few builders dare customize it. Especially when dealing with the über-cool Paris Dakar model with its large capacity fuel tank, solo seat and historic BMW racing livery. This is the position that long-time friends Mattia Ruiz and Fabio Franceschini of Svako Garage found themselves in. Svako are relative newcomers to the scene, but are gaining ground quickly thanks to their enthusiasm and creativity. The Sicilian duo recently ended up with two R80 G/Ss in
