Malmö, Sweden-based artist Miles Johnston portrays subjects whose figures are in states of flux, whether through fragmented bodies, multiplied faces, or limbs contorted into impossible positions. Often depicting Johnston (previously) or his partner, the graphite portraits distort typical anatomy in a way that balances the familiar with the unknown and visualizes the thoughts and emotions otherwise hidden inside the mind. Whether set against a trippy backdrop or quiet beach, each piece portrays the experience of the body “through a kind of internal metaphorical language,” the artist says. More

Welcome to Élémentaire Zine Issue 05, the Body Issue. Body represents a big step for us, as we leave behind the comfort of the elements and begin to branch out and explore a wide range of exciting topics. With our eyes ever ready to be inspired, we have gathered together a series of images we feel showcase the grace, power and diversity that the Body offers as a subject. This issue includes a range of interviews including a discussion with still life photographer, Julien Palast, who reveals more to us about his SKINDEEP project. We also talk to Ramona Zordini about her incredible ‘Changing Time’ series and how she defines her artistic style. Alongside this, we had the great pleasure of having a chat with the revolutionary modern performance company, Pilobolus. Accompanying these interviews, in this issue, is a whole host of extraordinary artwork from talented creatives working with a variety of mediums. I’d like to say personal thanks to all of the artists involved in this issue.

Illustrator James R. Eads (previously) incorporates elements of Impressionism and fantasy in his colorful landscapes. The Los Angeles-based artist builds imagined worlds with vibrant, short brush strokes, often featuring exotic birds, half-sunken boats, and swirling star-filled skies. Eads shares with Colossal that he is deeply connected to music, which consistently influences his work. His personal passion translates to client commissions, as he has created imagery for dozens of bands ranging from The Black Keys and Leon Bridges to Jerry Garcia and Iggy Pop. More
Camille Rose Garcia once described her role as a fine artist as a person who gets to create worlds that don't exist. Featured in a special sketchbook insert in Hi-Fructose Vol. 30 and on the cover of Hi-Fructose Vol. 8, looking at her art is like looking through the looking glass into a warped, dark fairytale. It's a place full of dripping scenery, bejeweled forests with elegant swans, deer, serpents, and skulls, and her signature women with bold eyelashes and running mascara, empowered versions of the folkloric and cartoon princesses that inspired them.
