This 1960's Bonnie Cashin coat for Sills was found recently by Miss A who shared it with me in an excited text message. My respose: So when do I get to see it in person!. For me, coming across a Cashin coat in a vintage or thrift store is like finding a colorful sea shell on a wide sandy beach. Eureka! This coat has that classic Cashin silhouette: kimono sleeves attached in one with the body. This allows that bold plaid check to continue out onto the sleeves without breaking up the graphic look. But what stops the show here is a great, dramatic cape like collar. On closer study, it seems to have been inspired by a triangle shawl shape. Imagine folding a large square wool shawl into a triangle then draping it around your shoulders, over a coat. This has that same effect. What pushes it over the top is that this shawl collar is cut from a wildly colored double cloth: fuzzy amber, orange and red colors on the outer mohair textured side with a blinding magenta pink and red on the other smooth surfaced side. That contrast is used to its advantage with this collar design since how its worn or draped can effect whether that contrast is seen or not. Narrow suede trim binds off all edges. The coat is not lined, so that bright pink and red side is clearly seen when worn. Like so many Cashin wool coats, this one has roomy pockets in the side seams. It was designed with a very wide hook fastening at the neckline that at one time were covered in suede. The center front would hang loose and unfastened. I will share the inner workings of this design and the technologies she used to create the look in my next post on this great coat. Stunning 1960s Bonnie Cashin snap front pink leather coat. Absolutely gorgeous and unique Bonnie Cashin Sills pink leather coat. White pearly snap front closure, with double tie at waist. Soft and beautiful dusty pink leather, fully lined in pink silky material. Deep, lined side pockets. Seam down center back and around middle between bust and waist. Hits mid-calf. Leather with unknown lining. No size listed, but would best fit up to a modern size 6/small/medium. Excellent vintage condition, almost pristine. Only noted flaws: some slight discoloration on bottom of lining and some slight seam splitting at right underarm, both shown in last pic. These 2 interior flaws are not deal breakers since they do not affect integrity or wearability. The exterior has no flaws noted except some typical wear, small scuffs, and creasing on leather, which is not noticeable at all since the whole jacket is a serious LOOK. Bonnie Cashin is one of the most famous American designers often equated with starting the American sportswear movement. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a number of Bonnie Cashin pieces on exhibit. Consider this a legacy purchase that can be passed down, and own a piece of American fashion history. My goodness, the time is fast approaching, if it isn't already here, in which we'll all find that our pasts aren't past, they're just hanging around the internet. It's like a time machine. Not sure how I feel about it, but since there's nothing I can do to stop it, I might as well join in. Look at the fur collared coat at the very top of this post. It's a Bonnie Cashin original from the 1960's. Well, guess what, I owned this coat once upon a time. It was my favorite coat ever. I loved that thing. Wore it for years. It had a convertible collar if I'm remembering correctly. You could do the furry thing or you could leave it plain. I remember the color being a slightly more orangey, kind of a rust red. Jeez, I haven't seen or thought about this coat in so many years. Wow. Bonnie Cashin was an influential fashion designer who did the best sportswear ever. She was so ahead of her time with the idea of sports separates and in the comfy way she cut her styles, she was often called 'the mother of sportswear'. I loved her clothes. She was also, for many years, the head designer for Coach Leathers. (Look at the mauve leather backpack. I don't exagerate when I say she was ahead of her time.) The only reason I was able to afford my gorgeous coat was that I probably bought it wholesale when I worked at Cosmo in the mid 60's, either that or it was just a big splurge on my part. Ah, the good old days. The coat showed up at the Ithaca Antique Mall and someone came in and scooped it up. Wish it had been me.
