The Wealth Elite: A Groundbreaking Study of the Psychology of the Super Rich by Dr. Rainer Zitelmann is a non-fiction book or rather a study on what makes some of the world’s wealthiest self-made millionaires stand out from other people, and what are their common traits - if any - that helped them achieve such success and wealth. This book was originally an academic study as part of a doctoral dissertation and that shows in the meticulousness of the research and structure of the book. The book is divided neatly into several sections including the state of existing research on this subject, the role of luck, personality characteristics of self-made wealthy entrepreneurs, the methodology followed in this book of guided interviews, and finally interview excerpts from 45 wealthy people on what sets them apart, and the subsequent findings and conclusions from it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Wealth Elite and found some of the findings quite interesting. The part I liked the most was actual interview excerpts presented verbatim, which really helps one to understand exactly what the interviewer is trying to say in their own words. Zitelmann’s writing style is effortless and engaging and makes this a fun read. My only suggestion for similar future projects would be to limit research to those people who come from families whose household income was middle class or below, which rules out anyone “born into wealth.” Secondly, I would be very curious to learn more about female entrepreneurs and their own journeys because one reason why the male-to-female ratio of self-made entrepreneurs is so skewed is due to unequal opportunities and freedom growing up. All in all, this is a very interesting book that I enjoyed reading.

The queer painters taking the stage of contemporary art grew up in a very different world than their predecessors. A generation removed from the AIDS crisis, these artists came of age with relative freedom and security. Now, they are embracing the canon, looking far back into the history of figurative painting and making it their own. We visited the studios of seven of these artists, talking with them about what drives their work and their expansive visions for what it can mean for the world.

Greg Githen’s How to Think Strategically: Sharpen Your Mind. Develop Your Competency. Contribute to Success is unlike many business strategy books, focusing on the underlying perspective and micro skills rather than on the business options and strategies themselves. It is a book full of concepts, well documented with supporting analogies, biographical examples and case studies from Christopher Columbus and Benjamin Franklin to Kodak, Oakland As Baseball Team and IBM. I found the book to be well organized, building on several models created by the author and supported by a number of supplemental resources. The 20 micro skills outlined throughout the book fit within this framework and are explained in excellent detail with relevant examples for each. Throughout the book, Githen also addresses leadership styles, perception, decision-making skills, and application of micro skills in developing a strategy. For writing a strategy, the author has presented a very excellent model consisting of 5 steps. This model is used to explain a few of the company strategies presented. Following the last chapter, there are several appendices valuable in assisting organizations in using the book to train their employees. I liked the way the author explained his concepts. How to Think Strategically by Greg Githens is an excellent book which can be used as a supplement in a Strategic Management Course or in an organization training their managers to become strategic. Highly recommended!
