'healing with words' mixed media on canvas 11"x14" tired? worn out? in pain? lost? hopeless? just a bit confused? need a break? things that heal: lighting a candle listening to the music of the rain the warmth of another writing it down a cup of tea (with honey and lemon for extra points) morning sunshine water (drink it in, immerse yourself in it, jump in the puddles) time with your lovely self - intentional playing in the studio - no purpose, just fun that juicy piece of fruit a piano and cello playing together getting your hands dirty giving without expecting anything in return a good stretch walking barefoot in the grass the smell of camp fire in your hair a glass of red wine kisses - lots of kisses a good cry a good laugh time words quite exhausted after an intense week of work on the house. we made room for the baby, organized and cleaned everything in sight, and are now ready to open our home for lots of visiting friends for a whole week. a reminder of the things that refresh and restore is in order. amongst these, developing a new daily art practice, loads of stitching, playing with small abstracts, finding poetry. have a wonderful weekend, friends! 'give up' -daily poetry 'little things' -daily poetry 'words to fall' -daily poetry

I drafted the pattern for this dress then with free motion stitching I filled the back entirely with poems and even some hidden journaling (I did this by sewing on the reverse side of the dress) I even add a poem that is very dear to me inside the pockets of the dress.

The poem - Where the Mind is without Fear was my first commission and that has since brought about others. I received another commission to embroider the very same poem for a dear friend. Similar but different is what makes each piece so unique. The embroidered poem is for her father who served in the Indian airforce and so I chose to embroider the poem in blue. Working on the border. My signature appliqued silk circles with multi coloured buttonhole wheels. The completed piece. I hope my friend's father will like the way I've visually represented his favourite poem.

Because I love letters and text and because I like to find letters and text in unusual places or see letters and text used in all sorts of ways, and because I love pop culture and feminism and the sites where these things have strong textual elements, I have started yet another blog. Here are some examples of the types (pun intended) of stuff I like: Mixed Media textiles by Cathy Cullis (via Poppytalk) Sunlight Poem Projector by Jiyeon Song (via Craft) ABC button sewing (via The Style Files) Book Art by Nicholas Jones (via design*sponge)
