Misty hills. Lonely forest roads. Plenty of vines, moss, and unkempt trees. And the cherry on top—a gorgeous abandoned building that radiates eeriness and grandeur in equal measure. That’s our dream home right there. Especially if the place looks haunted.
By using a simple yet effective design twist, the Flow Wall Desk transforms itself from a piece of art on the wall, into a functional desk by showing off its unique aesthetics. The Flow Wall Desk acknowledges the potential of creating a desk inside one’s indoor environment. Only with one twist, it becomes a true joy to have as a separate working area. It can be subscribed as a piece of functional art that builds on Robert van Embricqs his Design track record of transformations in space. This one offers a part of the interior that shifts with time: a cozy workspace during the day becomes a compact wall hanging after being used. Van Embricqs was inspired by recent global events, and the longer-term trends that precede them, to devise a statement piece that lends dignity to the digital workspace through craft, warm textures, and durably engineered fastenings. The Flow Wall Desk is adaptable to any wall and can be used throughout homes, libraries, hotels, and many other inside locations. It creates the opportunity for a temporary work surface in a sunny corner and becomes an ergonomically adjustable desk in a compact city interior which invites the user to fold that desk away when work is over. When it comes to functionality, each part of the Flow Wall desk has been specifically engineered without losing the appeal to attract, just like a folding magic trick with a well-kept secret.

Architecture is meant to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. When you look at a structure, you can distinguish these two ends but they cannot be separated, and the relative weight each of them carry can vary widely. Plus, every society has its own, unique relationship to the natural world and its architecture usually reflects that as well, allowing people from other places to learn about their environment, as well as history, ceremonies, artistic sensibility, and many aspects of daily life.

Michael C. McMillen is a mixed-media artist based in Santa Monica, California, whose installations and sculptures made out of recyclable materials, or as he calls them "the cast-offs of our material society," play around the themes of time, change, and illusion as a means to create what he refers to as "visual spiritual poetry." It's very interesting work with a magic of its own. The two friends I've brought with me to view his work have referred to his pieces as post-apocalyptic. I see it more as a beautiful display of decay. They had a similar eerie effect on me as when I visited a ghost town of the Gold Rush era, here in California, for the first time. Like a glimpse at the ancient ruins of the future. To fully appreciate his installations you really must experience them. You can view his work in person at an upcoming exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California from April 16, 2011 to August 14, 2011, entitled Train of Thought.
Fourth Grade artists are continuing their architecture unit of study, but this time we are working on form. Form is the element of design that describes three-dimensional objects, or things that have height, width and depth. Students are building two-story houses out of cardboard, and trying to give their houses a sense of character. Students LOVE working in three-dimensions! Check out their finished sculptures soon in the Zilker hallway!
