Ladybird Nature Corner ~ Bullfinch โ by John Leigh Pemberton
Europe's most endangered Passerine bird. The male and female look exactly the same - unlike the European Bullfinch. They are also bigger by approx. 15%. Only found in mountain laurel forest in the far north west of one Azorean Island - San Miguel. I walked for 2.5 hours to the top of Pico Bartolomeu (near Pedreira) to see them - it is 3,000 foot high and very steep in places, have never worked so hard before to get a bird photo!. Among other things they feed on a small pink clover like plant that grows at the side of the road, this bird has the remains on his/her bill. They were driven close to extinction in the 1850's. Following the earlier mass deforestation of the island the birds were driven to eating orange tree flowers - without the flower an orange wont develop so farmers set out to erradicate them. Thankfully due to wonderful conservation efforts by SEPA at the Priolo centre they are making a slow recovery and approx. 1,000 birds exist in the wild. I am slowly recovering from the trip - almost human again after several beers but will need a dip in the thermal lake to hopefully prevent my legs seizing up! Have included a couple of photos below of the final approach.
