For more information on Buy Nothing Day, visit www.Adbusters.org. Buy Nothing Day facts: * The first BND was launched by Adbusters in Vancouver in September 1992, based on an idea by artist Ted Dave, as a day for society to examine the issue of over-consumption. * In 1997, it was moved to the Friday after American Thanksgiving – “Black Friday” – which is the one of the nation’s busiest shopping days. Outside of North America, BND is usually celebrated on the following Saturday. * Despite controversies, Adbusters managed to advertise BND on CNN, but many other major TV networks have declined to air the commercials. * Though the decentralized nature of the event makes it difficult to pin down participation numbers, thousands of activists have held public events in over 65 nations, including most US states, Canada, the UK, Israel, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Norway and India. While critics of the day charge that Buy Nothing Day simply causes participants to buy the next day. Adbusters states that it "isn't just about changing your habits for one day" but "about starting a lasting lifestyle commitment to consuming less and producing less waste." Shopping and consumption facts: * Per capita consumption in the U.S. has risen 45 per cent in the last 20 years. * Although people today are, on average, four-and-a-half times richer than our great-grandparents were at the turn of the century, Americans report feeling “significantly less well off” than in 1958. * A recent article in New Scientist featured research suggesting that the more consumer goods you have the more you think you need to make you happy. Happiness through consumption is always out of reach (New Scientist, 4th October 2003, Vol.180, Issue 2415, p44. This year, it has a stronger environmental theme.
Some people believe Black Friday represents a consumer culture, which is harming the planet. The Buy Nothing movement encourages people to take a stand by buying nothing at all, or only buying handmade or used goods.
We were given this brief in Middlesex university to design a poster for Buy Nothing Day, early Autumn 2008. I really wanted to do more-like one of these big ad poster series I see in the tube with simple type and photography. The first idea was to choose a boy and a girl to run in the parking area of a super market as if they were drunk, really enjoying the ride- something they would do instead of shopping. I didn't find the right guy, but I was lucky enough to meet this girl Ismini, through a friend I knew and she was ideal for what I had in mind, even if I had to shoot her alone. We also run on few boys in the parking area of the market and they offered to enter the photo shooting but I didn't like the result as much so I went for the three versions I've uploaded. But if I had to go for one, I'd definitely go for this one! Unfortunately I didn't own a good camera and all the cameras in uni were borrowed/gone, so I am thankful to my ex-flatmate Fenia, whom I took with me and we both started shooting. It was fun! We also knicked a few croissants off the shelves and we fed our model too. It was all about Buy Nothing Day afterall, so it felt just about right ;p
B&W poster design for "Buy Nothing Day". I did this when i was breifly at Sheffield Hallam University. We were asked to create a A3 poster in black and white which can be photocopied and still have a strong design. I never got round to putting all the information on the poster. As more people actively choose not to shop on Black Friday, companies are now using anti-consumerism messages to boost their brands.

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” ― Mark Twain Have you ever heard the term, "Eat the Frog First"? I heard this several months ago and I'm not sure why when put this particular way it stuck, but it did. Basically, it's a way of systematically prioritizing your tasks each day, hour, etc. This is something I really struggled with when I first started working at home (and still sometimes do). Yes, working. This 'staying-at-home' stuff is no joke, but I digress. The idea here is to prioritize based on your need and desire to do tasks. Lifehack outlines it best: The things you need to do, but don't want to do. Aka, the "Frog(s)" The things you need to do and want to do. The things you want to do, but don't need to do. The things you don't need or want to do. Ideally, you want to reprogram your brain and create a habit of eating the frog first. The reward there is you've done the 'worst' thing first, thereby making everything else seem easier or better. For me, it's usually bathrooms, putting away laundry and some days, working out. I'm really trying to get better at this. I have developed a habit of putting these things off until I have to do them. Then I'm not happy about it because inevitably, I'd rather be doing something else, but it's all about recognizing things you don't like and working on them, right? Easier said than done sometimes... So now that we've eaten the frog, it's time to drink the ACV. I've gone through half a bottle and I am serious when I say it's a love/hate relationship. Love the effects, hate the taste. It has cleared my skin up and has really helped curb my appetite. I eat more than my husband so, this is huge for me. I can't sing it's praises enough. I will tell you that when it comes to 'healthy' stuff, I am no wimp. I used to eat field greens plain with no problem. This concoction however, has revealed my weak link. Head on over and see what it's all about. If you've never tried this, I HIGHLY recommend it. For the effects...not the taste. Tweet
