One of the big brags of the Silhouette CAMEO 4 is the power of the high pressure right side tool carriage which is reserved for just three tools: the Rotary Blade, the Punch tool and the 3mm Kraft Blade. The 3mm Silhouette Kraft Blade, which can ONLY be used in the CAMEO 4, is a very powerful tool which not only can cut through thick materials, but can also take advantage of the increased force of Carriage 2. However, it requires a whole different type of cutting - and thinking and planning. I would suggest you read this blog post first before you get started as I've intended it to be an overview with some best practices for using the Silhouette 3mm Kraft Blade. Unlike the AutoBlade or even the CAMEO 4 Rotary blade, you can not just pop the 3mm Kraft Blade in the Silhouette machine and expect to have a successful cut. You need to plan. And you need to be patient. This is NOT a fast process - in either the design or cutting process. If you rush, if you pick the wrong design, and if you try to cut corners you will end up wasting a lot of material and potentially damaging your machine and certainly your materials. THIS is what happens when you put the 3mm Kraft blade in and try to cut with NO knowledge or planning of how to use this very powerful tool. I have spent days upon days and a whole lot of money in testing materials and bad cuts to finally crack the code on the best practices for using the 3mm Kraft Blade. This blade is so new there is NO information out there from Silhouette and there's hardly any default cut settings for materials the manufacture claims to cut. For that reason, I am giving you MY best tips. This is what's worked for me...based on the EXACT materials I'm using. There are a lot of variations of leather and balsa wood and mat board... What Materials Can the 3mm Kraft Blade Cut: The 3mm Kraft Blade should be considered for thick, dense materials. I have successfully cut - multiple times - this genuine Cricut leather, this 2mm balsa wood, and I am currently testing to find the right combination of materials and cut settings for mat board and basswood sheets. Preparing Your Material and Cutting Mat A high tack cutting mat is suggested for a lot of the materials that can be cut with the 3mm Kraft Blade. The mat will keep the material in place - and help prevent slipping - during the necessary multiple passes. You'll also want to tape your material onto the mat to ensure it doesn't move. I used washi tape on all four sides of my material to secure it to the mat. If possible try to put your material towards the center of the mat as opposed to right near the edge of the grid - or at least position your design there. I used both the Silhouette Strong Grip mat and the Cricut Strong Grip Mat. The Silhouette mat is thinner and more pliable. While I successfully cut balsa wood on it, I found the mat bubbled a bit - side to side - while cutting. I think this was due to taping the material to it and then it slowly moving out from under the roller. The bubbling caused the multiple passes to be slightly off which resulted in some bad cuts. There are also no mat supports on the CAMEO 4 so you need a mat sturdy enough to support itself and the material on it. The Cricut mats are thicker and more sturdy. I did not experience any bubbling or mat movement with them. However be aware the thickness of your mat CAN change your cuts because a thicker mat may result in more pressure during cutting. Finally, I found it best to cut from the back side of the material (so the design is cut in reverse). This keeps your mat cleaner (especially on materials like this leather), your cuts cleaner, and if you get a bad cut on the first pass you likely won't even see it on the front side. ;) Picking the Right Design for the 3mm Kraft Blade The 3mm Kraft Blade - and 2mm Kraft Blade for that matter - are NOT for small intricate cuts. I repeat, the Silhouette Kraft Blades are NOT for small intricate cuts. This is a big broad blade. It can not make small intricate cuts. A few other things to keep in mind when picking designs for your Silhouette Kraft Blade. It does better on curves than it does on sharp corners. Designs should be at least a third of an inch wide at their narrowest point. Designs should also be positioned so they are NOT too close to the edge of the material to avoid splintering and to avoid the blade going off the edge of the material. If you have a design - like this three piece bow - I would highly suggest you cut each separately and not all in a single pass. The reason is, if the blade gets caught up at any point, the multiple cut lines can end up off. It's better to have one piece off than three. Trust me...I did a lot of testing. Multiple Passes with Varying Force and Blade Depth Remember that video I shared with you up there? There are two big reasons it did all that grinding. The first is I tried cutting with the loops or smart cuts on. Those are the small cuts in the negative space that the software automatically adds for rotating the blade, when you use the Action "Kraft Cut". The problem is the blade often got stuck in them and then it messed up the entire cut. Turning those off helped significantly. Secondly, I tried to just cut the material at full force at full blade depth from the start. That's NOT how the 3mm Kraft Blade works....if you want to get good cuts. Believe me. I know. Basically you need to first puncture and then score the material with the initial pass. Then you need to add a few more passes increasing the force SLIGHTLY with each pass then finish it with a deeper cut but lesser force. What this does is after you have cut through the material about 95% of the way, the deeper blade depth then does the last pass with just the tip of the blade slicing through the very last layer of the material. By backing off the pressure on this last pass you are preventing the blade from digging in and grinding into your cutting mat. Setting Up Your Design for the 3mm Kraft Blade Since the Silhouette software can't automatically apply varying force with each pass - you'll need to force it to do it. You do that in both the Design area and the Send panel by setting up a stacked set of copies of your design and then utilizing the Cut By Fill Color option. Each of these layers will then be assigned a different cut setting - each with a different force. Cutting by Color with Multiple Passes and Varying Settings In the Send Panel, it will look something like this. You'll notice each color layer has a different Material. All of those custom material settings I had to add manually - and each has a slightly different force as we talked about earlier with the scoring then adding increasing force with each pass. This is something you'll have to do one time for each material you try to cut. Once you add the material set you don't need to do it every time you cut that material again. So the next time I cut a piece of genuine Cricut leather, the settings will already be in there for me. If I cut a different type of leather I will need to add settings for that leather since there are likely variations on thickness!! I will, of course, have a Silhouette tutorial soon on how to add these special types of custom material settings. For today, however, I don't want you to get overwhelmed with information. I just want you to be aware of this different type of cutting when using the 3mm Silhouette Kraft Blade. The final step is to hold on tight. Say a prayer. Sip your wine and press Send. DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM YOUR MACHINE WHILE IT'S CUTTING. I would actually suggest you keep a light hand on the edge of your mat. This first pass is basically a score. You're making a track of the blade to follow for the rest of the passes. If the blade stutters at all - just kind of help it out of the rut by pushing or pulling lightly so it keeps moving. Don't worry if the second pass is slightly off from the first. As long as passes 2-5 are in the same spot you should be okay! The machine will slightly lift the blade between each pass as it adjusts the pressure/force you set up before completing passes 2-4. You'll adjust the actual blade depth after the 4th pass for that final pass. Before you unload the mat and material, check that you can pop your cut out. It should be a clean cut. Once you've confirmed it's a clean cut you can unload the cutting mat and your material. Now you're ready to either cut your next piece or start assembling your project!! The Silhouette CAMEO 4 specialty tools and blades are now available for pre-order and will be start shipping in November! But there have been a lot of questions about the CAMEO 4 Kraft blade, Silhouette Rotary Blade, Punch Tool and Pen Holder so today I'm going to try answer them! Can the CAMEO 4 tools be used in the CAMEO 3 or other Silhouette machines? All Silhouette CAMEO 4 specialty tools can only be used in the CAMEO 4 cutting machine. Which tool carriage does each tool work in? The 3mm Kraft Blade, the Silhouette Rotary Blade, and the Silhouette Punch tool all can be exclusively used in Silhouette CAMEO 4's Carriage 2 (right carriage). The CAMEO 4 Pen Holder fits in the CAMEO 4's left carriage, Carriage 1. What materials does the 3mm Silhouette Kraft Blade Cut? The 3mm Kraft Blade is a CAMEO 4 tool that features a blade that's at slightly different angle than a standard Silhouette cutting blade. That allows it to cut different types of materials - including leather, craft foam, fabric, mat board and chipboard. What materials does the Silhouette Rotary Blade cut? The Silhouette CAMEO 4 Rotary Blade allows users to cut fabric, including felt and canvas, without the use of a stabilizer. How does the Silhouette Punch Tool work? The Punch Tool marks pieces of a design that should be weeded out after cutting. You can read more about it here. How does the CAMEO 4 Pen Holder set work? The Silhouette CAMEO Pen Adapters allow users to use three different size pens or markers - of their choice - in Carriage 1 for drawing instead cutting. What is the price of each of the CAMEO 4 tools? 3mm Kraft Blade (2 pack) Price: $14.99 Rotary Blade Price: $19.99 Punch Tool Price: $12.99 Pen Holder Set Price: $9.99 Replacement Silhouette CAMEO 4 AutoBlade Price: $12.99 Replacement Silhouette CAMEO 4 Adapter Set: $4.99 How is the CAMEO 4 Pen Holder different than the CAMEO 4 pen adapter and/or the sketch pens? The CAMEO 4 Pen holder is a set of three adapters and a base that allow the user to use third party pens and markers in their Silhouette CAMEO 4. Pick the size of the threaded adapters that best fits the pen or marker, slide it on and then twist the adapters into the pen holder and lock it into Carriage 1 of the CAMEO 4. The CAMEO 4 also comes with the a blue sketch pen adapters which allows you to use the Silhouette brand sketch pens in the CAMEO 4's left carriage. Sketch pens MUST be used with the included adapter. The original Sketch Pens will work, but the new Sketch Pens with the black casing and lip are ideal with the CAMEO 4 because the lip fits in the ridge in the sketch pen adapter ensuring the best sketch without dragging or shifting upward during sketching. Do any of the new CAMEO 4 tools come with the cutting machine? No. The only tool that is included standard with the CAMEO 4 is the CAMEO 4 AutoBlade along with the 4 tool adapters. New 2mm Silhouette Kraft Blade (2mm) for CAMEO 3, Curio, Portrait 2 Along with the release of the CAMEO 4's 3mm Kraft Blade, Silhouette is also releasing a Kraft Blade for some of the older model Silhouette Machines. The 2mm Kraft Blade can be used with the CAMEO 3, Portrait 2, and Curio all of which have a 2mm clearance. The 2mm Kraft Blade can be used in either carriage of the CAMEO 3. It can also be used in the CAMEO 4's left carriage when used with the white Kraft Blade adapter that's included with the CAMEO 4. How is the Kraft Blade different than the Deep Cut Blade? The Deep Cut Blade and the 2mm Kraft Blade both have a maximum blade depth of 2mm. The difference in the two blades is primarily in the blade angle and therefore the type of materials they cut best. The Kraft Blade has a broad blade angle which makes it ideal for cutting specialty materials such as crepe paper, leather, and fabric. The angle of the Deep Cut Blade is such that it's ideal for cutting paper-based materials. Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Silhouette Cameo 4 Tutorial for Beginners! Complete start to finish tutorials for your first Silhouette CAMEO 4 project
It's now easier than ever to cut Craft Foam with your Silhouette machine...and you don't even need to have a CAMEO 4! The new 2mm Silhouette Kraft Blade cuts Craft Foam like butter and I have the perfect cut settings for you. The 2mm Kraft Blade works in the Silhouette CAMEO 4, the CAMEO 3, Portrait 2, and Curio. In other words - any machine that has a 2mm clearance! Power on and connect the Silhouette cutting machine machine. Place a sheet (or sheets) of Craft Foam on a Strong Hold Cutting Mat. In the Send panel of Silhouette Studio select the Available machine from the machine list. Go to the Design area. Start by opening the Page Setup panel and select the machine as Auto CAMEO, the cutting mat as Auto CAMEO, and the media size as Auto 12x12. Open your design by dragging and dropping or going to File > Open. I am using an adorable cactus design from the Best of Beck McCormick Bundle on So Fontsy. I separated the design (select > right click > release compound path and/or ungroup) to cut each piece of the design on different colors of the craft foam. Filling the pieces with color using the Fill Color tool and revealing the grid lines helps me visualize where each colored piece of craft foam should go on the cutting mat. I removed some of the "prickles" from the original design since they are so small - and given that the Kraft Blade has a larger blade, the overcut on small areas is pretty pronounced. Go back to the Send panel. Select Craft Foam as the Material from the drop down list. CAMEO 3, CURIO, Portrait 2 users: Select the Action as cut and the tool as Kraft Blade. CAMEO 4 users: The Action (Auto Cut) and Tool (Auto Kraft Blade) should be automatically selected for you thanks to the auto tool detection and sensor on the back of the adapter. I would recommend adjusting the cut settings from the defaults. I found the best craft foam cut settings with the Silhouette 2mm Kraft Blade to be: Blade: 20 Speed: 4 Force: 30 Passes: 2 The Kraft Blade dulls quickly due to the dense materials it can cut. For this reason, don't be surprised if you need to adjust these settings (specifically increasing the force and number of passes) often. Twist the area around the blade to adjust the blade depth. I would recommend starting at 0 and turning from there so you ensure you are on the correct depth. Put your 2mm Kraft Blade into the tool carriage of your machine and locking it in. No adapter is needed for the CAMEO 3, Portrait 2, or Curio. In the CAMEO 4, the 2mm Kraft Blade must be used with the white tool adapter in the left carriage. Make sure the blade is in the adapter correctly or it will not hit the material when cutting. Return to the Send Panel and click "Send" to begin the cutting. Here's a quick version...or you can watch in real time in this Silhouette School Facebook Live. Keep in mind there is also a 3mm Kraft Blade that is ONLY available for the CAMEO 4 and will only work in the right high pressure carriage. The 2mm Kraft Blade can not take advantage of the high pressure tool carriage, which means it is more limited in the materials it can cut - but it still does an awesome job. The Silhouette CAMEO 4 comes with not only the new Autoblade, but four tool adapters. The adapters are needed so tools and blades designs for the Silhouette CAMEO 3 and other older machines can be used in the CAMEO 4. The four adapters come standard with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 machine. There are four different types of adapters - each with a sensor on the back so the Silhouette CAMEO 4 can auto detect what tool and tool adapter are in the carriage. For this reason it is important to use the correct adapter so the machine can detect which tool you are using and automatically adjust the settings in Silhouette Studio. The black adapter is for the black ratchet blade The blue adapter is for sketch pens The gray adapter is used for the Silhouette Deep Cut blade The white adapter is for the 2mm CAMEO 3 Kraft blade (not yet available) Each adapter has a 1 on the front as a reminder it can only be used in CAMEO 4's Carriage 1 - the left side. To use an adapter, carefully unsnap the tab unlock to open up the adapter. Place the tool inside and then snap the lock closed. Place the tool into the CAMEO 4's left tool carriage. Keep in mind, adapters can only be used in the left carriage. They will not fit into the right carriage. CAMEO 4 tool adapters are a replaceable part. I suspect they'll become a popular replaceable part pretty quickly - because they don't seem very well made. I foresee them snapping and needing to be replaced quite often. Confused on which tools can be used in the Silhouette CAMEO 4? You're not alone. Between two different tool carriages, various tool adapters, and multiple versions of the same tool, it's easy to see why knowing which tool to use in the Silhouette CAMEO 4, 15" Silhouette CAMEO 4 Plus, and Pro can seem like a guessing game. The first thing you should know is all the same tools can be used in the CAMEO 4, Silhouette CAMEO Plus and Silhouette CAMEO Pro. So when I say "CAMEO 4" I mean the Silhouette CAMEO 4 series of machines. The Silhouette CAMEO 4 has two different tool carriages..different in that one is "standard" and one is "high force." CAMEO 4 Standard "Flat Back" Tool Carriage Tools The standard tool carriage is the the left tool carriage. I call this the "Standard Flat Back" tool carriage. It's standard in that it delivers the standard cutting force. The standard flat back tool carriage is different than the rounded back carriages on the Curio, CAMEO 1, 2, and 3 and Portrait 1 and 2 in four main ways: It has a flat back to account for the tool's sensor strip which allows for auto-tool detection It has a wider opening It has a teeth-style locking mechanism Three evenly spaced alignment grooves These changes mean the older style tools, now known as "A" tools don't fit in the CAMEO 4 unless you use one of the adapters. The adapters are going to be phased out as new "B" tools are introduced. The Silhouette CAMEO 4 tools, known as "B" tools are designed to fit perfectly in the flat back standard carriage. These tools are: CAMEO 4 Autoblade "B" CAMEO 4 Pen Holder "B" 2mm Kraft Blade "B" - coming soon Ratchet Blade "B" - coming soon Deep Cut Blade "B" - coming soon There are also a few additions to the list that can be used with a Silhouette adapter: Black-bodied Sketch Pens + Blue Adapter Ratchet Blade "A" + Black Adapter 2mm Kraft Blade "A" + White Adapter Deep Cut Blade "A" + Gray Adapter Premium Blade + Gray Adapter *The black-bodied sketch pens will remain dependent on an adapter and can only be used in the Standard Flat Back carriage. Finally there are several third party tools which can be used with a third party adapter: WRMK Foil Quill + WRMK "D" Foil Quill Adapter WRMK Cutting Machine Pens + WRMK "D" Pen Adapter CAMEO 4 High Force Tool Carriage Tools The High Force Flat Back carriage, which is ONLY found on the Silhouette CAMEO 4, has a different type of motor than its neighbor to the left. The High Force carriage delivers high force and is therefore reserved for just three specialty tools: 3mm Kraft Blade, Silhouette Punch Tool, and Silhouette Rotary Blade. These will be known as "C" Silhouette tools. The High Force carriage is also a flat-back carriage with auto tool detection, however it's grooves are spaced differently only allowing "C" tools to fit. Likewise the tools on the back of the C tools prevent them from being inserted into any other tool carriage. Fans of The Kardashians were taken aback after noticing a UK reality star on the newest episode of the show.
Getting started with Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro is pretty quick and easy...and lucky for you I'm going to walk to you through from unboxing to set up! This Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro beginner tutorial will explain what comes in the box and how to get your machine and Silhouette Studio software. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Unboxing: What's in the Box? When you receive your Silhouette CAMEO 4 machine, you will not only receive the cutting machine, but several other necessary accessories in the box including a power cord, USB cord, CAMEO 4 Auto Blade, ratchet tool, a blue tool adapter for sketch pens, and 24" x 24” cutting mat. (For the record I giggled at the size of the mat!) Power Cord: A two part power cord, which connects to the side of the Silhouette CAMEO machine and to a power source to supply power to the cutting machine USB Cord: The USB Cord is an option to use to connect the CAMEO 4 Pro with the computer when the Bluetooth connection is not being used Type B Auto Blade: A single tap auto-adjusting cutting blade that will automatically adjust the blade depth based on the material type the user selects in Silhouette Studio Blue CAMEO 4 Tool Adapter: The blue tool adapters to use sketch pens in the left tool carriage of the CAMEO 4 Pro. Blade Adjustment Tool: The tool is used to adjust the depth of the black ratchet cutting blade (not included) and to manually adjust the AutoBlade Four Piece Roll Feeder: An adjustable and detachable roll feeder that can be connected in pieces and used to cut various width vinyl rolls If you purchased a CAMEO 4 Pro bundle you will have an assortment of other tools and accessories as well. What comes in the box with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro is slightly different than what comes with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 and CAMEO 4 Plus. In fact, it's one of the only differences between the CAMEO Pro vs CAMEO 4 and CAMEO Plus. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro Video Unboxing To ensure your 24" Silhouette machine cuts and operates correctly, it's very important to make sure all packing material and tape is removed. Be especially careful to remove the cardboard and foam piece hidden to the left of the tool carriage. You'll need to move the carriage to the right to remove all the packing material. Don't forget the piece of tape on the back of the machine securing the built in vinyl trimmer. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Set Up Start by connecting the two power cords. The smallest end plugs into the side of the CAMEO 4 Pro. With the power cord plugged in, press the Power button on the side of the machine to turn on the machine. The control panel on the right side of the machine will light up. I would now suggest you plug in the USB cord and connect it between the CAMEO Pro and your computer. This is an optional step as the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro does have bluetooth. Open the Bluetooth settings on your computer and pair the two devices if they don't automatically pair. This should only need to be done on initial setup. Register Silhouette CAMEO Pro to Activate Warranty Before you begin using your Silhouette CAMEO Pro, you should activate the 1 year warranty by registering your new cutting machine with Silhouette America. The serial number can be found on the back of the machine. Use it as you go through the registration process on the Silhouette America website. 24" Silhouette CAMEO 4 and Silhouette Studio Software Set Up Silhouette CAMEO 4 requires Silhouette Studio V4.4.350 - at a minimum - to run. All users - new and existing - will need to install this version or higher for the software to recognize the new CAMEO Pro machine. A software CD is not included with the Silhouette CAMEO 4. The free Silhouette Studio software can be downloaded from the Silhouette America website. Please note: You do not need a Silhouette CAMEO 4, Plus, or Pro to run this version of the software. Machine-specific features (such as the 24x24" mat option) will not show up unless a CAMEO 4 Pro, for example, is plugged in and powered on. Existing Users Adding on a CAMEO 4 If you have an older Silhouette CAMEO or Portrait and are adding a CAMEO 4 Pro on you can update the software and basically start cutting with it. Once the machine is connected to your computer via USB and/or Bluetooth and powered on, the software should recognize it in your Send panel's Machine List. Select the machine to pick it to cut with...once selected, "Auto" settings in the Page SetUp panel will adjust to match the selected machine. Any software upgrades - Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus and Business Edition - should automatically go with the software update and you do not need to re purchase an upgrade to use with your CAMEO 4. If the software upgrade becomes de-activated follow this Silhouette tutorial to find your license key and reactive the Silhouette Studio upgrade. Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro Beginners: Brand New User Set Up In addition to the steps above to register your CAMEO 4 Pro and install the Silhouette Studio software for the first time, you'll also need to create a Silhouette America account and set up your Silhouette Cloud in your Silhouette Library. Create a free Silhouette America account here. This is a necessary and mandatory step. Next launch the Silhouette Studio software you downloaded and installed on your computer. Start by going to the Library tab along the top right. This will prompt you to sign into the library. Use the same log in credentials you used to create your Silhouette America account. You'll want to set up the Cloud right away. Once signed in, your name will appear at the top left of your library with several default folders underneath. The sub folder "Free With Machine" within the Design folder is where the free Silhouette designs that come with the CAMEO 4 Pro can be found. Designs you import into the software and those designs you create and save to the library will be stored in the User Designs folder unless you create and specific a different sub folder. Cutting Different Width Materials on the CAMEO Pro When you're ready to make your first cut with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro you may need to make some adjustments on your machine as well. Depending on the size of the material and/or the cutting mat you are using, the right roller can be adjusted to make it possible to cut material between 8" wide and 24" wide both with and without a cutting mat. To adjust the right roller's position along the roller bar on the CAMEO Pro, flip the roller bar lever down. Move the right roller to line up with the appropriate mark on the roller bar. In the picture above, I have marked the roller positions in red to make them easier to see. Here's what they look like close up... After moving the roller to the correct position, flip the roller bar lever back up to lock the roller bar in place and lower the roller so it can grab the mat or material as it feeds through. CAMEO Pro Mat Support If you are cutting with the Silhouette CAMEO 4 Pro mat support, hook the lip under the front of the machine so it pops into place. Make sure the machine is still sitting evenly on the surface when the mat support piece is installed. Adjust it so it's towards of the middle of the machine so it helps support the 24x24" cutting mat. CAMEO 4 Pro Cross Cutter The CAMEO 4 Pro cross cutter is found along the back of the machine. Press down the locks on each side at the same time to unfold it before using it. CAMEO Pro Roll Feeder If and when you are cutting rolls of vinyl or HTV you will want to assemble the detachable roll feeder. The roll feeder comes in four pieces. There are two roll holders, an end-piece locking mechanism which helps keep the whole thing in place, and a bar that stretches across all of them. Hook all four pieces into the lip under the front of the CAMEO Pro and then place the crossbar into place. You can adjust the position of the roll feeder cradle to accommodate different length / thickness rolls by turning the lock and and extending the roller extension piece on each the left and adjustable roll feeder piece. Tighten the knob to keep the extension roller in place. When you are not using the roll feeder you can nest it together to store. And your Silhouette CAMEO Pro is all set up! Keep in mind, all of the free tutorials on Silhouette School Blog are still applicable to the CAMEO 4 - you will find just very slight differences with the advancements of the AutoBlade and tool adapters.
