July 1st, 2017 is not only Canada Day, a federal holiday on which we celebrate the anniversary of the 1867 enactment of the Constitution - this year it's also an extra-special celebration, because Canada is now 150 years young. People throughout the country will be celebrating the holiday with parties, outings and beach days. No doubt many will be decorating their homes in red and white, the colours of the Canadian flag. As the central portion of the flag features a red maple leaf, the maple leaf is also prominent in Canada Day decor. To celebrate, I decorated our diy fireplace mantel for Canada Day with two projects - a Canadian flag garland and a framed maple leaf print. These are both simple yet festive projects to make with your Cricut Explore Air™ or other Cricut cutting machine. Materials Needed To Make Canada Day Maple Leaf Garland Cricut Explore Air Cricut 12x12 standardgrip adhesive cutting mat Cricut® cardstock, red Cricut white cardstock twine or string Steps To Make The Garland 1. In the Cricut Design Space, insert an image of a maple leaf. I had uploaded an image previously for my Cricut iron-on tank and tote bag projects. That maple leaf image now shows up as an option when I select Insert Images and search maple leaf. 2. Size the maple leaf to your desired size. The maple leaf I created for my Canada Day garland is 3.5 inches wide and 3.93 inches tall. Insert a circle. 3. Size the circle down to act as a hole to run the garland's twine through. Duplicate the circle. Drag circles to desired position. 4. Weld the circles together. 5. Select All and then Slice to cut out the circles. Delete the cut circles. 6. Duplicate the maple leaf to create as many as you need for your garland. 7. Cut with your Cricut using the desired colour of cardstock. For my Canada Day garland, I cut 10 red maple leaves and 9 red. 8. String all of the cut maple leaves onto twine (I used baker's twine) and hang. Done! Simple. Materials Needed To Make Canada Day Framed Maple Leaf Print Cricut Explore Air Cricut 12x12 standardgrip adhesive cutting mat Adhesive foil, red Faux leather, boxwood Picture frame Scissors Pencil Spray adhesive Steps To Make The Print 1. Use the picture frame's cardboard insert to trace out the background shape on the faux leather. Cut the faux leather out with your Cricut scissors. 2. Spray the cardboard picture frame insert with spray adhesive and adhere the faux leather to it. 3. Insert a maple leaf into the Cricut Design Space. It's there if you made the garland. 4. Size the maple leaf to your desired size. Cut out of red foil adhesive using your Cricut. Remove maple leaf from adhesive backing and adhere to faux leather background. 5. Insert your new easy Canada Day art into the frame. Done! (I ended up switching to a white picture frame because I found it worked better with my mantel's colour scheme.) I added a few Canada-related items to my mantel - a little jug from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, a seashell my parents gave me and a wee bagpiper a friend of my mom's in Nova Scotia gave me when I was a child. I also added some of my favourite novels written by Canadians, red and white jelly beans and a small bunch of red gerbera daisies. What different kinds of DIY projects can I make with the Cricut? If you just recently acquired a Cricut machine, you might be wondering just what kinds of projects you can make. As my Canada Day maple leaf garland made with cardstock demonstrates, you can make garlands. Many many garlands. I am garland-obsessed (as my daughter likes to point out). I made this fall pennant garland previously with my Cricut Explore Air, and also this gift tag ribbon garland using old Christmas cards. You can always visit Cricut Design Space™ for project ideas. There are Father's Day cards, cake toppers, designs to personalize your mugs and plates and text images to help you organize your craft supplies. More Canada Day Projects Another fun type of project to make with your Cricut is iron-on clothing, textiles or pillows. I made a couple of Canada-related projects for Victoria Day that would also be perfect for Canada Day. Check out this post to find out how I made a diy Canada eh? tote bag and a Made in Canada tank top using my Cricut Explore and red foil Cricut iron-on material. This was just a small sampling of the many DIY projects you can make with the Cricut. Let your imagination run wild! Will you be celebrating Canada Day? (Or your own country's birthday?) Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians! Although things are definitely different in the world these days and we won't be able to celebrate in our usual way, we can still acknowledge how proud we are of our wonderful country and how thankful we are to live here. I've been doing that by decorating my home with lots of patriotic decor. Today, I'm sharing how I've styled the sideboard in our kitchen for Canada Day. This portion of the sideboard got more of a Canadian Cottage look by using some little metal houses I got last year at Michael's against a backdrop of flowers and flags. Everything was placed on a red and white patterned runner and red/white gingham napkins add a homey vibe. I've set this area up as one might for some type of buffet served meal with plates and flatware placed inside various containers. I found this mug last year at a local grocery store and thought it quite appropriate. LOL The shelf above the sideboard was also given a few red touches. I always leave a bit of space between the decor on the sideboard to allow for mixing drinks as well as to break up the decor into vignettes. This Home Sweet Home sign was attached to the round metal wall art above the sideboard and a few flags were added. This is exactly how I feel about living in Canada. This end of the sideboard got more of a Canadiana vibe with some iconic Canadian symbolism represented here. I love this moose I found a couple years ago at Walmart - so perfect for my theme. A couple of little faux evergreens create a forest-like backdrop. I've had these canoe-shaped pickle dishes for a long time and just love using them for Canada Day decor. I added the flag vinyl cling-on to the top canoe. The oar was a recent find at a gift shop out of town. Dollar store flags were set inside a milk glass vase. This red lantern gives a vintage/cottage/camping type feel to the display. Red gingham ribbon was tied around faux candles with flag picks tucked inside. I created this sign on my computer and put it in a black frame. This area of my home is all ready to celebrate our national holiday and I enjoy seeing its festive look whenever I enter the kitchen. Do you do much patriotic decorating? It's really not that difficult to do. Try taking a look around your home for things that suit your colour scheme and then get some flags from the Dollar Store and you'll be all set! Thanks for visiting! Canada Day is coming up on July 1st. The day marks the anniversary of the 1867 enactment of the Constitution Act, which united three separate colonies into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada. But I think what people mainly celebrate on July 1st is the fact that it's warm outside (hot even) and we finally get to enjoy our lakes, beaches, parks and swimming pools. And maybe a cold beverage or two. Canadians don't tend to display the national flag on our porches as often as our American neighbours, but our red and white flag does make a strong appearance on Canada Day. The inspiration for my patriotic Canada Day ribbon flag was in fact a DIY American ribbon flag I saw on Pinterest. I googled "patriotic Canada ribbon flag" and came up with nothing but a bunch of plastic flags for sale, no DIYs. So I thought I would create a DIY ribbon flag tailored to the celebration of our beautiful country for Canada Day. Anytime we're celebrating a special event, it's nice to get together with friends. Today is no different. I have six Canadian blogging friends joining me to share their creative ideas for Canada Day food and decor. See them via the links at the end of this post. I bought most of the materials needed for the ribbon flag brand new from the store but it would be ideal if you had leftover red and white fabrics and ribbon among your craft supplies. Materials Needed For DIY Patriotic Ribbon Flag plastic or wooden dowel or branch (mine is 16.75") twine or string red fabric (or fabric that is primarily red with some white) white fabric red ribbon white ribbon red maple leaf - I used a plastic one taken from a dollar store wind chime kit. You could also cut one from fabric or felt. Ribbon & Fabric Quantities/Costs I paid $7 plus tax for ribbon and fabric from the dollar store: 1 folded rectangle of red & white striped fabric for $2 4 small rolls of ribbon for $1.25 each (1 roll of thin metallic ribbon with gold thread, 3 m/9.8 ft long; 2 rolls of white crochet ribbon, 2 cm x 1.5 m/0.78" x 59" each; 1 roll of white lace ribbon, 3 m/9.8 ft long.) I also paid $9 plus tax for ribbon and trim from Walmart: 1 roll of red & white check ribbon for $4, 22 mm x 2.7 m/7/8" x 9 ft 1 card with various ribbon/trim on it for $5, 5 different types, 2 metres long each. I also used some natural coloured wider cotton ribbon I already had, in place of a white fabric I purchased at Walmart and plan to return. I used a dowel that we had in the garage. I already had the red plastic maple leaf - I used it previously to top this True North Maple Cake. Just to give you an idea of how much material you need for this project: when my ribbon flag was finished, I had some of the dollar store fabric and a bit of the trim left but all other ribbon was used up. Steps To Make A DIY Patriotic Ribbon Flag Making this patriotic ribbon flag couldn't be easier: Cut lengths of ribbon and rip lengths of fabric. (I cut various lengths, from 20" to 24".) Tie the white and natural ribbon to the centre of the dowel or branch, alternating the types used. Tie the various red ribbon and fabrics to the left and right of the (larger) white area, alternating materials again. Tie the maple leaf to the centre of the dowel using white thread. The plastic maple leaf from the wind chime kit has a hole in the centre so it was easy to attach. I thought about cutting the maple leaf from felt - it would be easy enough to put a hole through the felt too. Tie a length of twine or string to the two ends of the dowel (not shown) to hang the ribbon flag from a nail or hook (or maybe outside on a tree branch?) There happened to be two nails holding up a picture in the spot where I wanted to photograph the ribbon flag, so I simply put the dowel over the two nails. I'm pretty happy with this loose interpretation of our red and white Canadian flag. I think this DIY version has a nice lightness about it. And it was so simple to make! Picking out the fabric and ribbon was the hardest part. (Now you can just copy me if you like.) Now it's time to mix up a sweet-tasting red cocktail or these family-friendly strawberry no-jitos. Get out and enjoy that sunshine my friends! Because we all know that part of being Canadian is partying hard in the summer to get us through those dark winter months.
