The FW-860 was one of several VTOL jet fighter projects developed by West Germany's Focke-Wulf in partnership with France's SNECMA. The FW.860 addressed this by incorporating a "nutcracker" nose/cockpit that broke from the fuselage and settled at a 90 degree angle, thus putting the pilot in a more natural control position.
Test flights of the SO.9000 were described by the author Bill Gunston as 'hairy' until the rocket motor was added in September 1954. During the 18-month test program the aircraft completed over 100 flights, eventually reaching a speed of Mach 1.8 and an altitude of 20,000 metres (65,000 ft).
The YF-17 Cobra was a Northrop Aviation creation through NASA to support further testing and research of aircraft at transonic speeds. The YF-17 Cobra was, itself, born from the United States Air Force's Lightweight Fighter Program.
