This guide to a Canterbury and Dover day trip from London will show you the best things to do and see in this part of England.
Autumn in England is a fantastic time to explore outside the big cities with the countryside displaying a vivid show of colour of rust coloured landscapes.
It's been a while since i've uploaded anything to flickr and what better to break my flickr upload silence than a few HDR shots of the inside of Chester Cathedral. For more information about Chester Cathedral see the site: www.chestercathedral.com/ This was a braketed exposure taken with a Canon 5D mkiii and an android phone application called DSLRController and then processed using Adobe Lightroom / Photomatix.
Canterbury Cathedral in Kent is the senior cathedral in England and Wales and the 'head office' of the Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury. www.flickr.com/photos/barryslemmings/sets/72157629528355137/ to see the full set. The cathedral's first archbishop was St Augustine who founded it in 597 AD. Excavations under the nave floor in 1993 found the foundations of the first cathedral had been built over a Roman road, just as also happened at Bradwell in Essex. The Roman road would have provided a good foundation. The building was extended in Saxon times but was damaged by a Danish raid in 1011 during which the Archbishop St Alphege was captured and later martyred. After the Norman Conquest the Archbishops became Norman/French and the building was expanded. In 1170 it was the scene of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket allegedly on the orders of King Henry II. Becket was later made a saint and his shrine at Canterbury became a major pilgrimage site for hundreds of years until King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. Today it is a World Heritage Site and a stunning place to visit.

There was a reason i wanted a nice wide angle lens. In my mind all i could think about was visiting the Chapter house in Bristol Cathedral, a brilliant space that i had not been able to do propper justice to previously. Sod's law it was closed off the very day i took ownership of teh new lens. There was some compensation though - being able to capture the serene light flooding into teh Victorian Nave. For me this shot expresses an uplifting feeling, aiided by teh light and teh height of the vaults as they appear in this shot.
"The Chair of Saint Peter itself is kept in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is a symbol of the authority of the Bishop of Rome as the Vicar of Christ and successor of Peter. Today, on this special feast day, we pray to respond ever more generously to the invitation that our present Holy Father gave to us during his visit. He said: ‘In the course of my visit it has become clear to me how deep a thirst there is among the British people for the Good News of Jesus Christ. You have been chosen by God to offer them the living water of the Gospel… be sure to present in its fulness the life-giving message of the Gospel.’ (Oscott Seminary, 19 September) This is our task, so that we may realise Blessed John Henry Newman’s desire to radiate Christ to everyone." - from Bishop Kieran Conry's message for 22 February 2011, the feast of the Chair of Saint Peter.
Laon Catherdral sits high on a strategic rock outcrop viewable from miles around. A trip to Canterbury & Dover was fascinating! So rich in history.
