Bull images from the Lascaux Cave of France, painted nearly 20,000 years ago. The bulls, symbols, and other markings all are derived from images within the cave. My cave-inspired paintings are based on prehistoric images found in caves in France and Spain, many dating back 37,000 years. I've studied these remarkable images for years, fascinated by the way shaman artists captured the spirit of Paleolithic beasts who shared their world. My artwork features unique backgrounds of textured plaster, pumice, and acrylic gels that I create to resemble stone cave walls while remaining lightweight. All colors are based on pigments used in the original artworks, as are the dots, grids, handprints, and other markings I incorporate into my paintings. For each of these cave-inspired paintings, I make a wooden frame painted in red oxide, which is a color frequently found in the original cave art.
