Pipilo maculatus, Spotted Towhee. Large, striking, long-tailed sparrow of western North America, from Canada to Guatemala. Inhabits dry upland forests, open forests, brushy fields and chaparrals. Forages primarily by hopping along ground, scraping away leaf litter. During the breeding season they mainly eat insects, ground dwelling beetles, spiders and other arthropods and in the fall and winter they focus on foraging for acorns, seeds oats and berries. Males sing from atop shrubs and low trees.
