Named after the flightless native New Zealand bird, the Takahe, this structure was constructed between 1918 and 1946, with the first section opening to the public in 1920. It was part of Harry (Henry George) Ell's (1862-1934) scheme for a road along the summit of the Port Hills, in the suburbs of Christchurch, to Akaroa via Gebbies Pass which would have resthouses along the way. He was dedicated to preserving the last remnants of native bush on the hills. The Sign of the Takahe was the largest and most ambitious of Ell's resthouses. (The other rest houses include the 1914 Sign of the Bellbird, the 1915 Sign of the Kiwi and the 1916 Sign of the Packhorse/) For other pictures of the Sign of the Takahe taken in the 1980s before the Christchurch earthquake of 2011, visit my album at www.flickr.com/photos/36791099@N08/sets/72157651980464566/
